I used to get about 230 miles to the tank. After cleaning out my intake manifold, I now get 380 miles to the tank. Took me 6 years to figure out what the HELL was wrong with my car. Read my thread here

shift lower and accelerate slower and give it a full tank or two and you will notice a difference, a scangauge would be your best friend.

I want to say im not doing this to be the expert but people that are getting twice the mileage i am are telling me these things to do, trust me i know it sucks to go any slower in a car with now power as it is, seeing as how i have even less but it really works

low rpm - 75% throttle, shift @ 2000-2500

Accel like that and get up to cruising speed and stay there

My last tank was 58mpg

I also found that using 5th gear at slow speeds kills gas mileage since you have to have the pedal down further just to keep the car moving.

thats when you drop down a gear but just need to not keep your foot in it if you aren't going any faster. you don't want to make your engine lag and be bogged down

Exactly, this is a good example of how too much throttle position at low RPM can adversely effect MPG.

Instead of continuing to banter about his driving habits lets solve the problem, jesus christ puma. You've done nothing in this thread to help solve his MECHANICAL ENGINE problem, just critized about what you've read on his DRIVING HABITS AND STAYING OUT OF THE PEDAL THAT HE DOESNT GET INTO WHILE DRIVING THANKS TO THE VIDEO HE PROVIDED!!!!!!

Still not fixed bro?

Haven't messed with it since saturday. I am going to go get a pcv in a little bit, and also some gaskets so I can pull the cat and check it out. Is there any fuel injector cleaners that actually work that I can try? I thought about seafoam, but I have no leaks and I don't burn any oil and I want to keep it that way...

sorry to upset you but his car sonds like it is running just fine and so does his mileage which is pretty decent, but since you don't want to hear thats your problem not mine.

There is nothing wrong with how you are driving, but you want beter mileage so i would say rev lower and try to keep your speed down and you will slowly get better results.

The higher your avg speed is the worse mileage you will get , sadly having torqueless wonder like we have means you have to pay to play and when you do that sucks your gas a weee bit more. If you want to do something really easy to look at you fuel effciency, get a vac gauge and tap into a vaccuum source and then you will see at idle you will use the least amount of gas and at wot you will be using the most and then you can watch it from there. Thats a cheap and easy way to monitor mpg's

Yep! 27.5 MPG in a CiViC is horrible...

Here's what I'm getting in a '98 HX shell with a '99 Si swap

Dang, you are getting 38 mpg racing with the air on in stop and go traffic. What do I need to make this happen?

Just have to slow down and rev less right? lol. I'm serious when I say that you have something wrong somewhere and it's not your driving habits. The guy above is getting almost twice your economy with a B16 DOHC VTEC swap and maybe the S4C tranny? I'm not sure he did not post but if that's the case he's at 4.40 f/d and at like 3800rpms while crusing at 60-63mph!

BlackDeuceCoupe, am I understanding your chart correctly in that you only use 87 octane? I wonder if this is helping your mileage, along with the lost power from retarded timing. I'm still finding your numbers pretty hard to believe, though. My friend's 00 EX with the original D16Y8 gets numbers like you...

my 92 si all stock w/ 330k miles on it get roughly 27mpg and it has bad compression
roughly 90psi in each lol
I'm too cheap to rebuild lol, drive it till it dies first

my old 99 cx with b20vtec got 39mpg

check your compression maybe

I havn't checked compression, but it burns zero oil , doesn't smoke at all, has no leaks whatsoever and only 123k on the ticker... Maybe I should do a compression test just to know for sure, but I'm pretty sure the rings and valve guide seals are ok...

Believe it! Who would lie about such a thing?!?!?

Look, I've been driving HXs for 8 years - I know a little bit about squeezing extra miles out of a gallon of gas - got 62+ MPG with a D16Y5 once, but mostly 44-50 MPG.

I'm stuck in the 37-42 MPG range with the B16A2 motor, but that's okay - nice to have 160-170 HP on tap instead of 115!

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by one bad dx &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Just have to slow down and rev less right? lol. Yep! You hit the nail on the head...

I don't race anybody unless they **** me off - the rest of the time, I clog traffic - like a Pace Car driver instead of a race car driver!

And, yes, my S4C tranny keeps the motor rev'ed like a **** - like 4200 RPM @ 70 MPH. Doesn't seem to hurt my mileage though...

I drive by the tach mostly - get the best performance @ 3000-3500 RPM - about 50-60 MPH. Below 3000 RPM the torque drops off the chart - feels like a D16Y5. 3500 RPM is the sweet spot - nice power/good performance/great mileage.

The only ECO-driving techniques I use are pulse n' glide, engine-on-coasting, and turning the A/C compressor off going up hills and coming off stoplights - and 50 psi in the tires, of course.

Anyway, 27.5 MPG sounds awful to me - but maybe I've been driving HXs too long...

Have you ever considered swaping some gears? Like an LS F/D ratio with an LS 5th gear set? Might only be in the $400 dollar range given you remove the trans but could pay for it's self very quickly. 5th gear ls tranny on the highway was right around 2800-3100rpms at 70-72mph

Yeah, I have... but you know what?

IMHO, the B16A2 w/S4C is THE perfect combination for a HX shell - and I'm NOT saying that just 'cause I own one!

This %$# thing hauls *** off lights - hits the cutoff almost instantly in 1st & 2nd.

LoL!

I could drink a Coke waiting to shift outta 3rd - and by then it's catch-me-if-you-can anyway!

Plus, I LIKE having the extra revs in 5th gear - saves a lot of shifting! All I gotta do is roll on the throttle and I'm up to top speed in seconds.

So, yes, I've thought about it, but why mess with perfection?

You have an HX(vtec-E, the "E" standing for economy) he has an EX(vtec), it's not fair to compare the 2!.... also, in my original post, I did not mention names, so try really hard not to take anything I say personal, k.........

BTW, shouldnt you be busy replacing that $$$ o2 sensor of yours?

Er...

I got a VTEC motor too - nothing's wrong with the O2 sensor (only has 1) - and it's $59 including shipping!

Maybe you should re-read the thread...
