27.5 mpg?
I have a 96 ex coupe. Does 27.5 mpg sound right for city driving? It doesn't have any CEL's, and seems to run good, I was just hoping for better economy. Thanks

Re: (OMGWTFBBQ!)
I have tried babying it (keeping it under 3K rpm), normal (shifting at 4000 rpm), and driving it hard, and it says the same all the time. Can't figure it out...

Re: 27.5 mpg? (craigaria)
If it's all city driving with a lot of traffic, then it's not bad. It's not good, but not bad.
Use the least amount of throttle movement as possible to accelerate the car and keep it moving.

I got a 96 EX w/ the d16y8 in it and get around 33mpg with mixed driving. I also hit vtec at least once a day and also have a misfire issue. Maybe your car needs a little tune up? Dunno but like the other guy said it isnt good, but it isnt bad either.

I have a 2000 HX and on my 1100 mile trip to California I consistently got 32 MPG which was a bit low.
I do have a CVT transmission that is blowing out. It won't rev over 3k no matter how hard I push it.
Sounds like you have a manual anyway though haha..

Mine gets 47+ avarage. 75% highway, 25% city. I'll get 40 with mostly city driving. D16y5 head, d16y8 block and 5-speed tranny, Evo2 cat back and high flow cat.

Whats the deal? I bought the car a couple months ago and the guy I bought it from had replaced the plugs, wires, distibutor. It looks like the O2 sensor is new. It idle's good and makes good power. Could the cat be clogged? Would that throw a code?
I sure wish I was getting mpg in the 30's...

That's too low, especially because you said you get "up to 32" on the highway. The first things I'd check would be all the basics...have you changed your oil lately? How are your spark plugs, air filter, etc? Don't forget your tires' air pressures either. I wouldn't take the previous owner's word on anything, go check it out yourself or have it checked out.
In my 95 EX (D16Z6) I consistently get 32-36 mpg on a full tank, and I don't drive like a grandma. My friend who does happen to drive like a grandma in his 00 EX (D16Y8) gets over 40mpg---the other day he filled up 1/3 tank and got 43mpg

sounds low to me. I get 30-35 in my stock 93 EX, and I have a heavy foot, and like the A/C. That's in town driving.
replace regular maintenance items
valve adjustment
O2 is starting to go bad <--- main possibility

The tires are at 40 lbs. I set the timing and checked it 3 times, I just pulled the filter off and drove it up the street and noticed a small power gain, but it seems pretty clean (it is a foam type)
I wish it was throwing a code, I hate to do a full tune up on it and swap an O2 not knowing if that is the prob or not.
By the way, the motor is a d16y8 with a manual tranny.
What is the correct O2 sensor for this car and how much does it cost?
Would a bad cat throw a code?
If I could get 43 mpg I'd sh*t myself

Re: (Relic1)
well the first thing to change is your driving style...if your shifting anywhere above 2k your mileage will suck! accelerate slowly when in the city, such as really slow from lights and stop signs make sure your tires are iflated to max sidewall psi, oil change, fresh plugs, make sure your timing is on point, if you need more help...just ask since i am getting about 60 mpg right now

Re: (pumafeet10)
If I shift under 2000k rpm I'll get my *** ran over around here. When I tried shifting before 3000 I was driving like a granny, it wasn't in the powerband at all and people were riding my tail all the time. It just doesn't make any power that low, especially with the air on. Don't get me wrong, 60 mpg would be great, but I don't want to risk my life to do it

Also, what is the best way to make sure the timing is "on point". I tried my best but with the pointer so far away from the marks, it is hard to line it up perfect because it changes if your head just slightly moves. Maybe I need to extend the pointer closer to the balancer

I'm not racing around, just driving normally. But even when I putted around I didn't see an increase in economy after 2 tanks, so I now shift at 4000 rpm since it makes no differance.
I guess I'm just going to have to spend some cash and do a full tune up and O2 and hope that helps...

That's pretty crappy, imo. I drive a 96 hatchback DX and get a consistent 47mpg in the city. Something is wrong with your car or your driving style is teh suxors.
