Just bought a 1993 Honda Civic, that started for me a few times when I bought it and drove it home. Often when I tried to start it, the starter would just spin and not engage, so I got a new rebuilt Nippo Densa starter. Had it bench checked before putting it on. Having the same problem. The starter spins but does not engage. Removed starter to make sure starter head is extending properly when it is engaged. It appears to be extending like it should. Is it possible this thing needs a Mitsuba starter rather than the Nippo Densa? I did match the old starter with the new one I got to make sure they were identical. Flywheel teeth seem fine. Flywheel will turn with screw driver. Starter seems to work fine when I pull it out of housing and turn the ignition switch. Tried jumping the battery, just in case it was low voltage. That did not make any difference. Any thoughts anyone?

Solved this one on my own. I checked the water in the battery and added some distilled water since it seemed low. I put the battery on a trickle charger and that seemed to give the battery the extra strength it needed to start the car. Really don't know why, but it did work. So this may not have been a problem of a wrong starter but of a weak battery.
