Re: [FAQ] Complete DIY How To: Timing Belt/Water Pump Change on a D16Z6 - lots of pic
only thing i do differently seeing that ive done 2 t-belts in the last 2 days at work, is instead of putting the covers and stuff on and then setting lining the crank up, there is an arrow on the block, well on 90% of cars, and a dot or mark on the crank sprocket, line em up and youre done...
nice write up though

This a good how to, I just used it.
A better way of getting the crank shaft bolt out of its hole is by using a chain wrench over the AC pulley. It came loose with a little fight but I didn't have to take the starter out or any of that stuff.

My weak little D15B7 is approaching 180,000 miles...
Is this all I should change?
Timing Belt (Part No. 14400-P08-004)
Tensioner (Part No. 14510-P08-003)
Water Pump (Part No. 19200-P08-003)
Anything else?
Total comes out to $150.46 shipped from Majestic Honda.

Some say to change the oil pump too. Last time I did it I didn't. Next time I will though. That is if doesn't go to hell before then. I also usually replace the other belts while I'm at it. You know, AC, Alternator, PS. I think that most Honda dealerships usually do the valve cover gasket then too. That one's up to you though. No need to get into that if it's still good.
P.S. I think I have the same car, but mine is a 95. It will be 246,000 miles in a week or two.

I have another car and a motorcycle, so I don't use the Honda all the time.. or else I would have a lot more miles.

What would be the best tools to remove the crank pulley bolt? An air compressor or extension rod with breaker bar??

Do what that other guy did, drill a hole in angle iron and polt it to the pully, put another bolt in a different hole so the pully doesn't move and use a 17mm deepsocket and an extenders with a breaker bar

Just did this job today. I went in mainly to change the crank seal (oil seal). I was able to pry it out with a screwdriver and then press the new ones in with sockets.
This guide was fantastic, very well put together!
A few suggested changes to the guide:
The crank pulley bolt can be done as soon as the car is jacked up. No need to do any other steps. I recommend doing the pulley bolt first in case it doesn't work out for you.
Also, the top timing cover needs to be removed before the alternator bracket can be removed.
Again, thanks for the awesome guide!

I have a 93 del Sol Si also, and this guide has really helped me out.
I know about Honda engines, but this was my first time actually touching the internals. I changed my headgasket and lined up the crankshaft and camshaft to TDC easily and started her up just fine
This was a good experience for me and I have more knowledge of how a engine actually operates on the inside.

Sorry but i'm new here and seems like asking questions more than answering. lol! Finding this very thread is like finding a needle on a haystack.. Anyway, the d16z6 is from a 95 ex auto. Would this be compatible to my 95 manual dx? Can i use my stock ecu, harness?
What else do i need for this swap?
Any help would be appreciated
tnx. Jun

Tried doin this today an can't get the crank pulley bolt loose any ideas on how to do it? I have a much bigger hex shaped opening on the pulley an the tool that was described a few pages back is too small we tried the impact an a breaker bar an can't get it loose any ideas?

Good write up I did my 97 civic just out of the book. I wish I would have seen this first. I would suggest while you have the valve cover off check and adjust your valve clearance if needed

Re: [FAQ] Complete DIY How To: Timing Belt/Water Pump Change on a D16Z6 - lots of pic
I know thisa thread has been up forever and didnt really want to read every entry so I am gonna post this in case it wasnt put up. For those of us who dont have access to a air compressor I found the easiest way to break the pulley bolt loose was to spray it with pb blaster and let it sit for a few hours. this is AFTER i broke two sockets and damn near my leg after slipping off the breaker bar when jumping on it to get it loose. lol now really the most pain in the butt part about this whole process to me was putting the cover back on the timing set with the rubber gasket intact. noirmally I would have just used some silicon and dabbed it on to hold it on but I could not/didnt want to wait the extra day or whatever to let it cure. so I just put the cover on without the gasket.its not a critical component and can be lived without... as well as the upper cover over the cam gear. which I left off to be able to monitor the timing belt condition. this was all done on a 1990 accord with the f22

Warning -- The upper and lower timing belt covers protect the timing belt from exposure to conditions that might otherwise shorten its life or cause it to jump time, which could result in major engine damage.

You don't want dirt, rocks, sand, water, etc to be on the belt or in that area hence why All Data says to never use it as a stored item and why Honda made it as it is to protect the t-belt.

Will be doing a timing job in the next few weeks. Does anybody have a list of key torque settings for this procedure? (water pump, valve cover, etc..etc..)
