Default FL5 Fuel Filling Problems

Hey, theres a 2023 Type R FL5 that no matter what the fuel tank will not fill up all the way or close to its 12.4 gallon capacity. Customer ran the tank dry to prove the point, and after sputtering his car to a stop, the fuel fill maxed out at 10.6 gallons and a reflected estimated range of approximately 250 miles. When brand new it showed 345 miles when delivered. Customer has receipts showing the first 2 times he fueled up the car up it took 12+ gallons. Since then, after his 3rd fill up and all fill ups since, the car will stop filling at 10.4-ish gallons and roughly 240-250 miles of estimated range. The shop tool doesn't show any codes at all including any codes for warning messages and lights the customer saw on the dash and even took pictures of but nothing in the cars memory. Honda techline says no codes no problem. Honda Techline doesn't have any answers on any ideas as to what may be wrong or parts they'd authorize to be changed. They state no one else has complained about range and fuel capacity.the customer is irate and i have no amswers as to why 2 comparable type R's off the truck read 350 miles estimated range and this type R only takes no mayter what no more than 10.6 gallons. The customer is upset that emptying and dropping the tank to fill from bone dry will be a chargeable service at 3 hours ÷ gas cost. Other owners on the groups also reported problems filling their FL5's past 10.5 gallons but no codes and no problems beyond overall and estimated range.

Unrelated the customer states the car died 3x, and he found the negative battery terminal hanging in space. Once he reconnected it the car drove better amd it stopped dying out. However he indicated several warnings popped up and the battery disconnecting cleared the memory. Customer states the warnings popped up after this battery incident as well but nothing is in the memory. The warnings he said came up were rev match/reduced power, emissions control fault/reduced power, parking brake fault may not be available consult dealer.

All help is appreciated the guy waited long for his car and it may end him filing a LL claim

My only thought would be something wrong with the fuel tank float for the fuel level indicator or sending unit, it may have a malfunction causing the ECU to think the tank is full after about 10 gallons, does the fuel gauge on the dash/cluster show full after filling up and range stating only 250 miles?

I'd be an irate customer too if I was told I needed to pay diag time for what is 100% a warranty issue!

I'm not familiar enough with the current crop of EVAP systems to point toward a specific component, but this sure sounds like an issue with the tank venting or ORVR system.

Items that need further clarification.

1) What does hung in space for the batter terminal mean? That the negative cable was off the battery?
2) Do not put too much emphasis on the range in a car. I honestly feel that the range is generated by prior driving habits, monitors, sensors, etc. so it is not a good indicator.
3) Does the gas gauge go up to F "Full"? If so, leave it alone.

Fill up the tank one day, with the car off, and do not top off the tank. Drive it at least 60-80 miles, preferably highway, then go back to the gas station and fill up again. You will have a good idea of your gas mileage. If accurate, leave it alone.

Now, the supposed venting issue. If your venting issue is truly an issue, you will not be able to get 1/2 gallon to a gallon of gas before the nozzle at the pump shuts off and clicks. You don't fill up to 10+ gallons and it shuts off being a venting issue. You will know when you have a venting issue. I spent 2 + months with another car, that is now sold where I cleared out air in the fuel filler neck, and there as spider webs in the EVAP Line and that was the problem. I could not get more than 1/2 gallon at a time.
