Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
Don't the s2k's have some type of traction control to help with the snow?? My buddy said it makes worldsss of a difference in his '08 mustang gt.. Granted they are 2 different cars.
If the S doesn't have it then please ignore this post

That will depend how he goes about his maintenance. If he sticks to dealer maintenance they will charge an arm and a leg because they are no longer making the parts. This will be several years from now but when my muffler blew on my Probe, Frasier Ford quoted me at 1099.00 for a replacement muffler. Yes just the muffler...

Here is something to consider. If you buy the SI, you might still be able to get some type of factory warranty coverage. New car with less miles. Not sure here, but I know on some other cars (like my BMW), I was able to buy a 2 year factory warranty which has already paid for itself, and then some.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
i was really tempted to get an s2k myself and instead got the si, my main reason was that you can't fit anything in the s2k. i go skiing quite a few times every winter and there's no way skis would fit in it, camping would also be a bitch. in my si i can fit 4 people and all their skiing/boarding or camping gear. the s2k isn't a good car to have if it's your only car.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
I was saying I grew up in the northeast and I'm used to driving in the snow because of that. Therefore driving in the snow does not scare me.
It's similar to saying that I grew up around guns and have handled guns for years. I have training in proper gun safety. Guns do not scare me. This doesn't mean having a loaded one pointed at me would be comfortable of course, just like having a moron hurtling toward me on the road isn't a positive in my world either.
Both are potentially deadly weapons, but you can be properly trained to control either.
Also, driving alone in inclement weather is very different from driving on a crowded interstate with all lanes but one clear but with drivers still getting impatient and attempting to pass on the snowy shoulder. Just like going to the range is very different from being in a firefight. Granted with the driving there are rules involved and it's all meant to be a controlled environment no matter if you're on a back road or on that crowded interstate.
When I snows I'm not forced to drive on the interstate no matter what though.
Let's not forget that I was saying the OP should get a daily beater to drive in the snow and then keep the nicer car at home safe when the weather is bad.
I might not be afraid to drive in the snow, but that doesn't mean I want to bring a nice car out in the snow to face the elements, the salt or the other drivers.

06+ has VSA
00-05 does not
For $14k you're not getting an 06+
I'm glad someone finally corrected that the S2k has a timing chain and not belt. As another note, S2000's go through tires quite a bit more often than the SI would. Even with the stock alignment. The CR's alignment and the AP1's alignment is more aggressive than the AP2's. The UK alignment is even worse.
S2000 is more expensive to modify as well. It is certainly not a "cheap" car.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
Depends on what you are looking for. I recently decided against the Si for the s2000 because of two reasons.
(1) S2000 is a nearly track ready vehicle stock and because of this it is an enthusiast's car whereas the Si, while nice, is much slower, in a line or around a turn, and front wheel drive killing the enthusiast's dream.
(2) The Si should get better gas mileage, but the s2000 is not bad at all and it will end up coming down to driving preference in which comes out the more fuel efficient. In city driving I get 25-30mpg, I've averaged 31-33mpg on highway trips, and 37-38 mpg riding a couple car lengths behind a semi
I paid $13k for a AP1 s2k with 47k miles...

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
bottom line is, since you're coming from an em2, you'll enjoy either car.
s2k is more raw fun, but you need the extra $ to support it
Si is more practical for MOST people but both will still take atleast a tad extra $ to maintain compaired to your em2.
it's none of my business, but if you "need time to save" then you probably won't be able to afford the upkeep of either car over the course of 3-5 years.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
^^ yeah that. If not for the lead S2Ks get out of the hole from RWD, S2K vs Si would be a driver's race. I've pulled on a couple on the highway and smoked a few bad driver's from a dig.
I ran 14.8 bone stock with balding stock all seasons. Some people have supposedly run mcuh faster.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
1. we are heading into winter so it makes no sense to get it now
2. if i have the alloted time then y not keep saving.. bigger down payment right buddy?
3. debating on finishing turbo project mentioned in 1st post or parting now
4. smarter to get it then due to memorial/independence day sales that may be occuring at the time.
... smart people think ahead my friend

And nobody runs "sales" on used cars, especially specialty cars.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
Something else I don't think was mentioned yet:
I see you live in Maplewood. The rate that Hondas get stolen in that area is ridiculous. Both cars are nice, but the S2K is more "exclusive" and a hotter car for thieves right now. Also, it's a soft top, meaning with a knife, it takes about 5 seconds to get inside.
Do you have a garage to keep your car in?
Do you plan on sleeping in small amounts because you are paranoid about your car?
Do you actually plan on driving your car anywhere (i.e.-work, restaurant, mall) and being able to go inside (or further than eye sight away)?
These are all things people must ask themselves when owning even a POS Honda with a swap in a crime laden area.
The manager for my band lives in Maplewood, and I am peaking out the window every two seconds with just my car.
PS...with the Si, at least you'd have metal between your head and the stray gunfire from drive-bys.

^Not stock vs. stock.
You can't deny the power tho weight ratio that the s2k has over the SI period. You can't simply can't deny 40 more hp and like 300 less lbs. Stock vs. stock it's s2k all the way

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
edmunds.com says that an 04 s2000 weighs 2835 lbs while an 06 si weighs 2877. i'm not sure how you're getting a 300 lb difference out of that.

Re: Ugggh.. S2K or Si.. that is the question
you are right, I thought 2650lbs for the s2k but now I see about 2860 and my SI shows 2954 not the 2800 something you say. So only 100lbs difference.....But either way, 100lbs and 40hp equals a win and don't forget the torque deficit the SI has
