Default Serious serious BREAK problem! Help!!

Hey guys,

Everyone has been through, or currently is going through this: when you press on the break, it sometimes makes an annoying, loud screaching/squeeking noise. Well, for me, it won't stop.

-I put it on neutral / push car = loud metal scratches (clankclankclank)
-I put car on drive and don't press ANYTHING = loud metal scratch noise.
-I break = loud metal scratch noise.
-I reverse = loud metal scratch noise.
-I accelerate = loud metal scratch niose.

First, I thought the LOUD noise was coming from what I thought was my exhaust pipe dragging on the floor. But no, it's coming from the front/left side of my car - my wheel.

Ofcourse I'm going to take it to a dealer, but before I want to know what's happening to my car. So I ask you guys. What's happening?! Is it safe to drive? $$$$$$??

Thanks.

Maybe one of you calipers is rubbing but I would bring it to the dealer like you said. Make sure you tell them its the BRAKE and not the BREAK. Good Luck

Yeah sounds like maybe a calipur isnt in place or something... odd, as long as its only one brake doing it, should still be safe to drive. Just take it easy.

It just won't shutup! Agh....hopefully the dealership doesn't charge me a billion dollars for the "repair".

catch up dude. MichaelBolton said that on the first response to the OP

Have you looked at the brakes at all? On my integra once about a year ago I was driving where they had just paved and one of those little ***** of asphault got stuck between the shield and the rotor and sounded horrible whenever I was moving.

clankclankclank = metal scratches?

doesn't sound like the normal brake squeal? I'd check for a little rock or something, especially since it's only one wheel.

Nope, it doesnt sound like a normal brake squeel at all. It's like...a chainsaw grinding on hard , rugged steel.

Since you mention the rock/stone thing on the brakes, I should check them out again.

Thx =]

Sounds like you might have lost a pad. I have seen more than 1 pad lining (the fiber material), brake off and chip. If your only hearing it in one side, that is most likely the issue. I could be wrong, it is just a guess.

If this is the case, the deal "should" fix this at no change, since the issue is a bad pad from the manufacturer.

Good Luck

Even though it's a wear item, warranty inspection shouldn't cost you anything. Get it checked out.

FWIW, one of my vehicles got a stone stuck between the caliper and rotor. Awfull screaching noise all the time like you describe. Maybe that's all there is to it?

there is a piece of metal (or some other material) that is on your brake pads that is called the wear indicator. it sticks out to a certain point, and when it begins to rub your rotor, it squeals and tells you that you need to replace your pads soon. there is no such thing as "normal brake squealing". if your brakes were squealing for a while before the scratching sounds started, that was probably your wear indicator telling (indicating) you that you needed new pads. my guess is that you ignored the wear indicator and kept driving it like that, and then when your pad finally wore away, the pad base, (made of metal) was grinding against the rotor. metal to metal is not good. if this is the case, you will not only need new pads, but also a rotor, and possibly even a caliper. i hope the problem is just something else, but its what it sounds like to me. good luck

^^^He has a way bigger problem if this is the case and only one front wheel wore down to the "squealer" and then past it grinding metal against the rotor.

Nice idea, but one wheel having the problem doesn't make sense without another underlying cause. or just a rock between the shield and the rotor... lol

not necessarily...my theory(and it is just a theory{or opinion}), of course, is only based on my assumption that the OP ignored the original squealing of the brakes pads. its just an assumption, cuz its happened before. it happens to everyone. you hear those pads squealing the first time and man is it annoying. you keep saying "oh ill get it done when i can". pretty soon, you dont even notice the wear indicator anymore, and you forget all about it. pads dont always wear evenly, side to side. many factors can come into play, causing one side to wear faster than the other. so, one pad may have been worn down to metal faster than the other, and that is why one side is only making the noise, as of now. the noise he described as a "chainsaw grinding into metal" sounds like a pad base grinding into a rotor. thats my opinion, and i hope its not the case, as its much costlier to repair than a pebble in between the dust guard and rotor, or just pads. for his sake, i hope you are right about the pebble...lol.

Where I live we see TONS of rocks stuck behind the dust shield behind the rotors...This has been common on Hondas for years... If it sounds like it is coming from the front then hear which side, turn the wheel all the way to one side and pull back on the dust shield and let go so it "springs" back... doing this a few times will hep dislodge any rocks....
