how does the oil life meter work
does the oil life meter work based on how dirty the oil is?
Or does it just count miles and determine you need an oil change from there?

Re: how does the oil life meter work (killyourscene)
According to the holy Honda service manual, the computer keeps track of the average engine RPM, the average speed of the car, the number of miles driven, adds in the number of high rev events, throws the numbers into a virtual Martini mixer (shaken, not stirred), and pours out upon the instrument panel a scientific wild-@$$ guess.
Incidentally, the system is based on Honda oil and filter so if you change to synthetic oil it should last even longer. I have seen my "oil life" drop 20% during one 40 minute session on the track, and I've seen it go 10K miles of gentle open highway driving.

Nope.
If the oil life meter calculated the oil life solely based on mileage, then every car would have the exact same oil life at 3k, 6k, 7.5k, 10k, 30k, 100k, et cetera.
That simply never happens.
The PCM calculates oil life based on numerous factors, some of which were already mentioned by the other member.
