Throw out bearing or main shaft input bearing?
Hey everybody,
I have my 2003 Civic EX coupe with 120k in the shop right now. Basically, I had a brand new Exedy clutch kit installed and the car is making a loud throw out bearing noise when the car is in neutral with the clutch pedal out. It was making this noise before I had the kit installed but now it is much worse. My mechanic said he checked the new throw out bearing when he installed it and that everything looked fine and it spun without noise. Furthermore, he said he only got 1qt out of the transmission when it should hold around 2 but there were no metal shavings and the fluid looked clean. The car makes the noise and also (I didnt witness this - he told me on the phone after he took it around the block) that there is slipping/chattering noise when he shifted gears. The cars already been in the shop for a few days and as grateful as I am that my grandma let me drive her Ford Taurus for a few days, its not the coolest ride in the world. What do you guys recommend I do? Im thinking of letting him crack the trans and replacing the main input shaft, just in case (so I dont have to pay for another clutch removal), could I buy an OEM Honda throw out bearing and use it with my Exedy kit? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Throw out bearing or main shaft input bearing?
Awesome, thanks man! I found a shop that will put a new main shaft input bearing and check out the trans for around $550 which seems like a pretty decent price for all that labor. Im also going to put in a new OEM throw out bearing just to make sure that isnt part of the problem as well. Ill let you guys know if that solves the problem!

Re: Throw out bearing or main shaft input bearing?
throwout bearing noise is when the clutch is not depressed
-this is due to the pressure on the bearing when depressed makes the noise go away (usually)
isb/pilot bearing noise when clutch depressed
