Should I sell my car, buy a clean hatch and a bike?
What do you think fellow 7th geners? I reeeeeally want a bike, but my wife is giving me grief about spending all our money and says I'll need to sell my car first.
So I'm thinking, I'm seeing my car go for about 13-15g around here. I could buy a nice used hatch for 5-6g, buy a bike for about 5g, and bank hopefully a few g. Would this be an effective approach?
I really like my car but have always had a thing for hatches..
Good idea or bad?
Matt

Good luck trying to get 13-15k for your car. Might as well just buy a bike with the extra cash you have. Unless someone would trade you a hatch plus some money for your car...

No, she's saying she doesn't want me using our savings or to finance on a motorcycle, so if I want one I'd have to sell my car, buy a cheaper car then use the remaining cash to buy the bike
I've been searching, and I could be an almost new Ranger or even a 2000 Si for the price I'm looking for. Giggity giggty!

Kelley Blue Book puts your car at $11,400 private party resale value in Buffalo New York. That is the 2005 Special Edition EX with 40,000 miles in excellent condition. Im not sure where you are getting the $14-15K number from.
Edit: And given the economic atmosphere these days, the people who are looking at buying a Civic are probably looking at them because they are inexpensive. I dont know who is going to cough up $2-3.5K more than suggested retail value in this economy. Hell, I paid less than $16K for my car back in 2002, off the showroom floor.
Regardless, good luck if you decide to sell. Frankly, I think you should keep your car and put the money you are saving for a bike towards a Kswap.

keep the civic you have now. once you buy that hatch, its going to need a lot of work put into to get it the way you want it to look and run. i would just start saving funds for a bike. i also highly recommend you complete the MSF course prior to getting your M1 license. have a talk with your wife/family before your motorcycle purchase. its a dangerous form of transportation and consider the value of your family.

I've actually broadened my car-buying sprectrum. I might consider 2003+ Rangers and a few other cars. I'll pretty much just find a car that fits my price range.
But my father in law drives a bike so he said he'll teach me to ride and we'll ride together etc.

Hi, I'm new here but just bought an 03' Coupe EX with 51,000 miles.
I have been looking for about 3 weeks and can concur with the group, In my opinion 13 - 15 K is a bit high.
I have seen asking prices of 14K at dealerships, with a warranty and the 150 point inspection. Also for that money you can purchase a used 06-07 Civic with the similar miles.
The other negative is that being a stick usually cuts about 1K from the price of an automatic in the NYC metro area (private owner is selling around 10K).
This is just my opinion you mileage may vary....
Good luck,
Dan

Re: Should I sell my car, buy a clean hatch and a bike?
'03 are different than '05's.. and my ex is a special edition. So it's worth a bit more. But I'm not asking how to sell car, since I've bought and sold about 40 of them in my days thus far.

nothing "special" about a special edition, just that its CHEAPER then an EX. if you can sell your car for more then 11k i'd be surprised. sell your car, buy a hatch and HOPE it doesn't get stolen . if it gets stolen, at least you'll have the bike for backup, right?

Wait, your telling me a SPECIAL EDITION EX that has a in-dash cd/mp3 player, better wheels, better interior, better dash lighting, and a more streamlined appearance is worth LESS than a regular EX?
I see how you came to that conclusion...

Hell, some cars are selling for 17k. But we're not debating how MUCH I can sell my car for. I'm asking if I should sell my car, buy a cheaper car AND a bike, or just keep the car.

Re: Should I sell my car, buy a clean hatch and a bike?
Gotcha.
Well even if I only get 3-4 g left over for a bike, I could foot the rest or save up for the rest, or even finance the rest I suppose.

There is only one car in that link which is priced at $17,500
It's also located at a dealership. Dealership price > Private Party
More importantly; that is only the asking price, not what it sold for. I can guarantee they won't get $17,500 for that LX. Especially considering the other options that are available.
Link this for example. $490 dollars more, for an '08 LX sedan. Hmmmmm....
Keep the car. Buy the bike. Although, I'd wait until winter to buy one. They're usually cheaper then.
