Problem List / Crap Engineering List - 7th Gen
I was just sitting around, daydreaming about selling my ES2 and buying something other than a Honda, when I thought having a 7th gen common problem/shitty engineering list might be a useful idea. I realized I am HONESTLY not very impressed with some of the engineering work that has been put into our cars. Don’t get me wrong, I love my car. I never have any major problems, and it is pretty well established that the D series is one of the most reliable eco-motors around. I mean, until 06, it’s been in every civic since when, 1983?
To the main point; there are some “issues” I have been thinking about, and I think it might be helpful to others to bitch about them to each other. Feel free to add whatever you feel our cars are lacking and some common problems that seem to come up, and to flame if you want. However, I am not going to get into an e-argument over Hondas, so if you are just trying to **** people off, do it on clubsi or something.
If people actually do this, it might prove somewhat useful to have a list of common problems and areas of concern for gen7 n00bs.
Here she goes;
Automatic Transmission – umm…..do I really need to go into why I hate this friggin POS? I will add though, that if you look in the trusty helm’s manual, the automatic tranny repair section is like 10 times thicker than the manual repair section. I don’t even want to think about having to mess with that anytime soon.
Brakes – This is probably my biggest problem with my ES2. Our cars were built in the 20th century. Let’s get with the program guys. Putting drums in the back of a car that weighs nearly 3,000 lbs with 3 people in the car is a little ridiculous. IMHO they overheat VERY VERY quickly, and once they do, nothing but surging stops at traffic lights. I HATE warped rotors….and I brake very conservatively.
Heating – This probably isn’t an issue for people in the south, but I live in Calgary, and it gets kinda cold here. First off, the cabin won’t warm up until the engine does. No big deal. The PITA is when its like 30 degrees F outside and you leave the car idling when parked to keep the warm air coming out of the vents. The engine temp drops off really fast. I usually end up having to rev to 2k for a couple of minutes to keep the temp guage just below the halfway mark.
Window Regulators - Not that it’s specific to our cars, its just a PITA to take car of, and it seems to be a fairly common problem with Hondas that have power windows. Oh, and if you do happen to attempt it yourself, make sure the regulator was intended for your specific year and trim level…..trust me.
Anywho, that’s all I can think of at the moment…..add away. I know the headgasket problem is pretty common, although I haven’t experienced it myself. Also....i guess.....what do you LIKE about your 7th gen?

you must include the following:
power steering pump-if it start to leak, oh boy it will damaged your alternator too since the fluid will end up in the alternator.
Steering rack and pinion-i have this problem it's leaking till now the thing is honda hesitant to do the overhaul and they wanted me to replace the whole assembly which will cost me 1200.00 USD parts and labor .
lack of pollen filter(AC), don't know if the US civics come with it.
front struts

-front struts make clunking noise
-clutch masters make noise
-o2 sensor heaters blow way to fast
-engine is way to underpowered for how heavy our cars are
-t-belt is significantly more tedious to change than the years before
-seat belt buckle switches are boo boo on all hondas
-iac valves get stuck all the time
-MANUAL TRANNY INPUT SHAFT BEARINGS BIT ***** ON ALL HONDA TRANNYS!!!

-the ever so common cam angle sensor failure
hasnt happened to me, yet, but i see it happen very often
-SRS light caused by the damn belt buckles.
mine is on, im sure the dealer will not like the fact that i have RSX-S leather seats eventhough im using the OEM civic latch.
but honestly, what can you do? any car you buy will have it's list of common problems. cars are nothing but a product of corporate efficiency and federal standards.

I have to input the fact that I took my car in for a tune-up. Mentioned to the service writer that every time I let go of the brakes I hear a whistling type noise. I come back to get the car. The dude says they checked it and it's fine. they changed the brake fluid, the brake pads; checked the rotors, the calipers, the whole got darn thing. Yet. I STILL HEAR THE NOISE. I know darn well it's not just me hearing things. My cousin hears it too. So. I dont' know how to get rid of it or fix it. BLAH.
Also. The darn car sometimes won't start when I go to turn it on. I stop for a minute. Re-try the ignition and it starts up fine. Wtfpho?
