Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Finding a nice set of period 15" Reverse barrels wont be hard (something 4x100-friendly.. the relentlessly common 6.5" +~20) and is a great idea.
How scratched are the faces? the paint on this era of SSR is soft.. it polishes up beautifully if there's still decent paint left! Cant remember how good your decals were either, but can get some closeups or trace mine if you need...

Thanks! Yeah I think it will look a alot better with smaller tires then I can lower it more also, but I'm not into the slammed stance look.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
^^
I like them. Different enough as a much design to be appreciated.
I love that they're very early days for the 80's era of SSR barrel and face designs. The Welded barrels, removable faces, cap screws, and so on. Following on from the standard SSR Mesh; as apposed to the earlier welded sandwhich-construction with half-a-dozen fasteners around the outside merely for decoration.
Along with a handful of the SSR's I've already posted on this page (Takechi Project, Hiro Engineering, Hasemi Motorsport); It seems quite possible they were made to be sold by someone else..
Would be cool to find more about them.
..which makes a little more sense than throwing money at a 25year old set of wheels.. which to most people will 'look the same?' when done!
They will look sharp as when done anyway, whenever it is you get to it. The red decals and pinstriping will really pop against the darker grey centres. Mirror-polish some deeper 15" barrels.. and
I can easily appreciate it all - but it definitely doesn't need to be as low as the gold one beside it to be cool!

The scratches in the faces do go through the basecoat, and are deep enough for me to think they need a complete respray. I've restored a few sets over my history of collecting. I do have one very good example of the wheel vinyls to use for re-cutting. I may go slightly different on the restore, and run some metallic red versions of the vinyl. But, this is all hearsay, since my house is going to come first.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Gentleman and fellow wheel-heads, I am doing some research and am in need of some wheel wisdom. I am trying to determine which wheel manufacturers had the capability to do CNC machining in the early '90's (1991/1992) and may have produced the Mugen M7 for Mugen. It's pretty clear that they farmed out most of their wheel production during this period. I know that Enkei had the capabilities, but a source at Enkei Japan has confirmed they did not collab. with Mugen on the wheel. I suspected SSR and Rays may have had this capability as well, but have not seen an example from either manufacturer to confirm this. Can you all help shed any light on this?

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
I've been doing quite a bit of research on Fortran as they unquestionably produced the MR5 wheel for Mugen, but not much leads me to believe they did so for the M7. I'm also following the Wise Sports connection, but haven't determined who made their wheels for them either.
Any Rays examples from the era that display their CNC capabilities?

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Ignoring the CNC'd face; I think it'll be the style of barrel/lip, the type of fasteners, markings, and spec decals; that will be the best indication of who made it..
Anyway; more random SSR shenanigans..
assortment of silver 14"..
I picked up the ones in the centre a couple months back. Hard to pass on (although I had on these actual wheels earlier in the year!), as they're just so nice, clean, and original..
EX-C Fin
14x6 +25
1987
original silver face, full mounting lip, and polished tall caps.
Yep... tall caps on a 6" +25...
..and match my little EX-C mesh like champions. (Tall-cap on the mesh for additional matchingness...)
?
So surprisingly close to the EX-C aero covers... but still not quite..
Gold RH Spinner Fin plates I picked up for the ones posted further up the page. Not the right colour (originally went with the gold spinners and hardware), but NOS, rare, and interesting..
Pretty. Placed on a white EX-C fin.. because the chrome Spinner Fins above are just a little too crusty..!
Little Speed Star keyring..
Strange SSR badge. This is surprisingy metal, not plastic; and large - 100mm (4") across..
And finally, the Auswuch's made it onto the 4Runner...

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
heh.. Cheers. The photos being a couple feet away is doing it wonders..!
I do my best to keep it neat and tidy; but Toyota made these things out of damn crepe paper - even in a dry climate its doing its best to rust away...
One more from the other end.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Great pick-up - Full set, tidy, and wide barrels to boot!
I just absolutely love the Defi Fin face.. what a cool design.
I recently got a pair of tired incomplete 4stud ones. Still waiting for a decent complete set I can actually afford..
I dont expect to be able to find some plates/caps to complete the pair I have.. but good luck to you..! I think you're best bet may just be to settle for a set of EX-C caps - seriously, no one outside this thread will ever be able to tell the difference.

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
Some more pictures - heavy Spinner content this time..!
Mocked up and took pictures of these 8" Spinner Fin's before pulling them apart - they just looked too cool as-is. The barrels will be getting the 4stud SPfin faces above..
What happens when someone doesnt know about the grub-screw in the side of the cap. Poor little short spinner caps.. didnt stand a chance..
I think they hammered the one side off (fine, anticlockwise); then misunderstood the spinner.. and hit this side clockwise.
If anyone has a pair of this side (or a single, either side really..) let me know!
The grub screw.. used properly..
very flattering light for the otherwise-tired 6.5's..
1986 Spinner Fin, with the 1997 Spinner Evolution..
I'm currently trying to re-do a set of 15" 4x114.3 Spinner Fins; then a set of 15" 4x100 Spinner Mesh, and 14" 4x100 Spinner Mesh. I have no idea why. They'll eventually be done though.
Interestingly, and awesomly; both the tall and short Spinner cap collars use the same (large) mounting pattern! Tall caps all the way..

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
SSR Hasemi Sport S'5's back together.
Managed to - and fun to be able to - use all the original parts. Barrels, fasteners, faces, caps.. I did not add a single thing!
Chrome fasteners on powdercoat satin pearl grey faces.
The caps are still a little scruffy; but cleaned up, work well, and look nice enough.
Anyway, will get tyres eventually; unlike most other sets that simply get relegated to be eternal shelf ornaments...

Re: SSR WHEEL PIC THREAD
well, not those particular caps as they're the short cap; but yes to the equivalent tall S'5 caps.
The S'5 (and Bang Vec, Hiro V3, etc) caps use the equivalent 'standard' SSR cap collar (EX-C Fin/Mesh, Defi Fin/Mesh, Hiro V1/V2, Longchamp XR-C, Copro, etc) - tall for tall, short for short.
The EX-C Neo caps also use the standard SSR hex cap collars.
A bit of an exception for some though - the Meiju Radius' and Defi's with the standard hex short caps look to use a short collar with the large mounting pattern..
ALSO, the tall collars that mount on top of the plate (pinning it to the wheel) seem to be slightly shorter in early years. Both versions of the tall collar are basically interchangable though - a tall tall collar on top of the plate still allows the cap to screw right down.
The Star Magna and EX-C with the flip-cover cap uses a slight variation of the tall collar. Same mounting pattern and thread diameter again, but with a couple mm taken off to allow the cap to go all the way down. While these collars can be used for the regula standard hex tall caps, the reverse doesnt work (the flip cap will JUST bottom out on the thread).
The Mclaren and Lonchamp XRX use the standard hex cap's short collar, small pattern, for both tall and short caps.
The Racing Hart Spinner Fin, Mesh, and Spoke; and the Super Fin, Mesh, and Spoke; all seem to use one of two collars for all caps - either tall or short. Its a smaller diameter collar compared to the other standard collars, but uses the standard large mounting pattern of the regular SSR collars.
..hmm..
I think I'm going to have to re-read this tomorrow to make sure it makes sense!

Just ordered these for the plates caps and collars. Wheels will be up fs without the parts.. 15x6.5 4 x114 +30 (not sure on offset yet)

Great to see the early plate decals/logo's anyway, especially interesting as they're non directional on that set.. I was fairly sure they came left and right like the later V1's(?)
Bought a mint V1-R the other day; as despite the woeful sizing, it was just too complete, mint, and pretty not to.
Cap parts still in the plastic, blue tape still on the lip...
I prefer the shorter spokes of the V1; but again, this was 20+years old and looks to have spent less than 15 seconds outside of the original bag.
Anyway..
15x6 +40
4x100
1/1992 (late!)
Handful of different key numbers. I still can only see 8 or so key combinations possible (16 max.. but seeming unlikely), and keep bumping into the same numbers again and again..
112
133
151
173
227
232
712
..can anyone add one more; or better yet, two?
Keen for a key 151 if anyone has a spare. Happy to trade a 133 or 712!
