Paint Experts: Let's talk about R-81-5 (Milano Red for 96-98 coupes)
Painters:
Where can I get a hold of some R-81-5 paint? Not just the simple R-81 that's so common.
On 96-98 civic EX coupes (and probably DX), they come from the factory with a slightly deeper shade of milano red than 99-00 coupes.
At every parts store, all I see is R81 (even the Honda dealership! ).
I'm looking to paint my hood, front lip and rear lip this spring, and I'm wondering if there are any DIY options in the cards, or if I'll have to have it custom-mixed and painted by a shop.

How about an auto paint store? They can easily mix it up if you have the code. It is very common to have several varieants of one color so its no big deal to have done. My local NAPA does it and it always matches nicely.

Right, but I'm looking to paint it myself for about $20, vs. paying a shop $100 to make the exact mix.
I'm trying to see if I can buy the exact mix myself.

Thats exactly what im saying. The place where youre gonna buy your paint should be able to give you the correct color. No matter what color youre getting, it still has to be mixed using various tints. So it doesnt matter which R-81 youre getting. It still has to be mixed.
Also, for the amount of parts youre gonna be spraying, I doubt that the paint is only gonna cost you $20. Not unless youre buying some really cheap material.

Bah.
I'll just pay the $80 to get it painted professionally at a body shop.
This isn't really worth the hassle.
I thought I could get a can of Milano Red paint from the parts store, with some primer and clearcoat, and paint my lip myself. But I want something that matches exactly so scratch that.

What kind of store are you going to? Any place that mixes paint can get you that color. If you bring them a part from your car, like the gas door, they can even tint the color to make it a better match. Its no big deal if you want to save money and do it your self. I just think youre not going to the right store. Also, like I said, I dont know what kind of paint youre looking at, but I dont know about the $20. Red is the most expensive color.
