Whats the max size amp I should put in my stock 91 Honda Accord ex?
Wattage wise. I want the best out of what I have basically. I dont want to upgrade wiring, and I prefer not to upgrade my alternator because I may have to do wiring then.
So, whats the max a stock 91 Honda accord can handle without upgrading the car itself? I already have a better battery then what came with it, so thats not problem. So like, 600 watt? Maybe 1000watt?

i'd say your safe to run 3Kw with a proper sized capacitor, and good amp wiring. However, its always a good idea to have your alternator checked out. Take it to a parts store or a garage where the do AVR(Amperage Voltage Resistance) tests and see if the alternator is putting out enough juice to begin with.

I was originally thinking of a 1500watt amp. I dont need something super massive, but 1500watt is 4 times more then what I have now. So 3000watt would be the most? assuming my alternator is working fine.

Well...I honestly have no idea. What size should be in there? And, should I just buy a new one to replace it just in case? Or, risk it?

like I said, your best bet is to take the car to a garage, or somewhere wher they can do an AVR test, and check your alternators output.

how much power do you need to run?
pick out your amp and then worry about power.

You can put whatever you want in there the question is without at least 4 guage power and ground wire will you be getting the full potential power out of the amp!
I think not! you can get a cheap 4 guage kit for under 30 doll hairs! Do it dude!

wrong, you get what you pay for. There are so many cheap amp kits that are suppose to be 4 gauge. And there not. just 8 gauge wire with a fat coating on it. Stick to a true name kit, Streetwire, rockford, and my favorite tsunami wire kits.

Wrong/right. Wrong on the part that you can get the factory alternator to put out enough amps to run a 3k sound system. It will not. The amp will power on and play but will never reach its rms stage output. The most you can get out of a honda charging system is about 1300 rms watt out. You can go ahead and put a monster 3k amp in it. And a system of 500-800 rms will out play your 3k setup. Right.... on you should have the charging system tested before you put in your sound system.
Op what are you running right now and what size gauge wire is allready in the car ?

Re: Whats the max size amp I should put in my stock 91 Honda Accord ex? (excessumcarcer)
As in what system? I have a single Type E 12'' Alpine, and a 350watt Pioneer (I dont know exactly what it is, I cant check it without taking out my seat.) As for wiring, I have no idea. I had CarToys install it, and I just had them put in what worked. It was around, 730$ in about August of 05', that was for the amp, sub, kits and install. If that helps any. And how would I check the gauge of the wire? Is there a defining mark or number on it? Sorry, Im still a noob at car stereos.

I run 900 watts rms on my 97 accord with 4 gauge power acoustik wiring kit. Dims the lights pretty hardcore with bass high. And if i leave the system on for like 5 minutes without the car on it will kill it. And this is with a 6 farad capacitor. Id say max 1000-1500 watts rms on stock alternator.

Well, I was talking to my uncle earlier and he explained basically how it works and the math to it. He suggested not to go over 600, something like 800 well be really hard on the alternator at full power. So, my next question would be, if I got a 120watt alternator, would I have to redo any wiring?

Re: (excessumcarcer)
i wasnt going to post but damn!! that's a lot of rms guys!!
i personally run a 100x2 rockford bridged to one 12" sub and it hits lovely..
btw.. i have had this setup in like 9 cars over the past 6 years.(i'm a car *****). and i use a basic 8 gauge kit. odyssey battery, hid's full ex power everything. no probs..
i know i am not answering your question but i had to chime in..
just out of curiousity, what kind of amps are you looking at?? cuz just because they say 1000watts that doesn't mean squat.. RMS is what you need to be concerned with..

Re: (hb_guy)
really, I have put toghter some nice system that were way below 800 watts. To make a 1k watts rms you need about 79.36 amps from your alternator. Your factory will provide this. Anything more is just more stress. To help out do the big three upgrade. I bet if you plan your system right and install it correctly you can have a nice system. If you need help putting something toghter just give me a holla.

Re: (wrx-killer-Sti eater)
it depends also what amp it is... a pyramid 1600 watt amp will not hold a candle light to say even a rockford 500bd, so that also has to be taken into consideration.
you can get a no name 1000 watt amp or a really good underrated 1000 watt amp and one will seem like its not even there where the other will take all that alt. has and still be begging for more...

i have a rockford amp and sub, the amp is 1000watt RMS, which im running off the stock alt, 4gauage wire, a yellow top optima, and a 1.5f cap, my lights dim a bit but its not that bad. i wouldn't go any bigger then that without an upgrade to the power system tho.
