What oil does a manual transmission use?
I was wondering does any body know what type of oil or grease does a manual transmission use? Other than using Honda Genuine brand fluid I mean. My motor is a F22b1.

We can't tell you what type of fluid you need based on your car's engine specs. You would need to tell us the exact specs of your car to find out the answer. E.g. My car is a 95 Honda Accord LX 2.2L 16v automatic... I can tell you that your manual transmission fluid needs to be changed every 15k miles or 12 months, and that they don't have a dipstick for it; to check the fluid level you have put the car up on leveled jacks and make sure that the fluid is pretty much up to the edge of the hole where the bolt is (According to my Haynes Manual). I guess your best bet would be to have your VIN on hand, and call up a Honda dealer/shop in your area and ask them exactly what type of fluid you need based on your VIN, which will tell them all the specs of your car. In my experience with driving a manual transmission Camaro, I never needed to change the the tranny fluid whatsoever. That is assuming there are no tranny leaks. It is different with imports though. Hope this helps.

Don't let him lie to your even in a Camaro you have to change the manual trans fuild, biggest reason for changing manual transmission fluid the oil will become acidic over time and slowly eat away at seals and internals. he might of thought he didn't have to change his cause american like to use dexron auto trans fluid that only starts to look dirty after its eaten its way through most of his seals.
If your accord is just a DD, run 10-30 motor oil any oil brand you want

For the OP, a F22B1 is going to fall in as a 94-97 Accord EX, which should at that point be using Honda MTF and not a conventional motor oil. IIRC 90-93 was where regular motor oil ended being the recommended fluid. 94-97 states that you could use conventional motor oil if you absolutely needed to.

Again, a Good SYNTHETIC 10-30 is better than what they had before as their MTF, and DEFINITELY what they sell now, ESPECIALLY if you're trying to put ANY kind of power above stock through it.
Regardless of trans.
Form experience, Ive had a few

I only use Honda MTF in mine.
I love doing MTF changes because its one of the few things in which you can feel a difference. My transmission has a bad 2nd gear and after the fluid, its less noticeable. It didnt fix it, but going from the original MTF from 15 years ago to fresh MTF is a nice change haha.

thew new MTF is not any kind of improvement at all. Its like water, great for efficiency, not for performance.
A step up is the GM syncromesh with friction modifier (The RP and Penzoil both work weell too to nbandaid wearing suncros etc). Ive run RP 10-30 in a car making 600 and had better life out of it than the OLD Honda MTF. You couldnt pay me to put the new cat **** thin **** in my car.

Yeah if I was running a high HP set up I might look into a different fluid.
I was pushing 9psi on my D series and I beat the **** out of it grinding gears, missing gears, etc and it ran fine with the OEM MTF.

Re: What oil does a manual transmission use?
Well my car is a f22b1 and and the stock 5 speed transmission. Thank you for the replies. I guessing that buying the Honda MTF is my best bet then. Thanks guys.
