Default The way it shifts......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've got an '02 Accord V6 auto. It's actually my wifes car but I get to drive it if I'm good.

It's a great car, runs awesome, and shifts ok. There's nothing "wrong" with the way it shifts, I just don't like one particular situation.

Coming into a corner, say a green light, and I'm going to turn right making a 90deg turn. When I get back on the gas as I'm driving through the corner, that's when the car decides to downshift. From either 3 or 2 to first. What the F#%*? Why isn't it smart enough to downshift as I'm coming into the corner? I want sportier shifting damn it!

Are there any mods to improve shifting performance/sportiness? Chip? Flash? This "problem" makes the car feel kind of lame.

move the shifter down to the number two and when you come out of the turn put it back into d4..1 and 2 are independent meaning it wont shift in or out of that gear untill you change it.

you are driving an automatic accord.....

get used to it not being a "smart" transmission and "sporty" is also a word i would not use for the auto trans.

the 98-00 accord have some MAJOR recall on busted auto trans for v6, it's the same tranny on the last generation of oddessy and it's too, failing.

if you want sport shift, get a manual/standard from a CL-S

if you want a sporty shift, get a tiptronic AUTO trans from TL/CL

the main problem is that the older accords used 4 speed automatics so there was excessive gear hunting and loss of power between upshifts. as far as a solution, i don't think a new ECU will help. you will probably have to downshift into D3 for a second and then upshift to D4 to get power out of the corner.

on a lighter note, the newer models have phased in 5 speed automatics which have the rsx-style grade logic control which keeps the gears from switching back and forth from 3rd to 4th.

i'm not going do do this but i'm curious. are there any restrictions with an auto-manual conversion with newer model accords? i'm thinking there might be new sensors that might restrict this procedure.

sporty isnt something that comes to mind when you say Honda Accord, if you think about it, probably a recall on your tranny maybe? maybe its not meant to? doesnt really matter if your in a lower gear or not, if its a 4cyl stock, you wont accel, very fast anyways

Sounds normal to me, for a stock trans. Just about every automatic I've driven doesn't downshift untill you get into the gas. I once had a 3-speed auto trans in a Dodge that I would pull down to 2nd, as suggessted above, but I still wonder if that had something to do with the demise of that trans. ????

Not endorsing JET, but give them a call. I've had my ECU recalibrated, (not that it matters since I'm a 4-banger with a 5-speed) and my buddy had his V-6 Accord recalibrated by them. I haven't ridden with him yet, but he claims the tranny tends to stay down-shifted more, putting him in the power band more often and providing quicker response. I'm sure it's producing slightly more power too. I don't know for sure but it sounds logical... don't expect any increase in gas mileage, especially having to buy 91+ fuel.

But it's not a 98-00. Did you read the question?

Does anybody happen to have the TSB for it?

I've got the Hondacare extended warranty. If it needs something done, I would think I can have it done under the warranty. Not that it will make my shifting, bam, bam sporty though.
