Hey guys,

Can someone look at the autozone link below and tell me if it is accurate?
It seems to indicate absolutely no need to touch anything related to the TIMING belt to change the water pump?

Can anyone advise on how difficult it is to change a Water-pump on
a 1988 Honda Accord LX ( carb, 4 cylinder)? I think I have a water-pump
seal leak.

Does the Timing belt need to be removed?

( As an FYI, I did change all heater hoses, radiator coolant hoses,
thermostat and did a PRestone chemical flush and then a refill so I
am ok with tools and general stuff around the car)

Does it make sense to try BARs WATER PUMP SEAL CONDITIONER first?

Haven't did it on that year but I know the F22's Are pretty simple to do. I think it is all basically the same. Goodluck

yes you have to remove the timing belt. you might as well replace the timing & balancer belts while you have it all apart. Why do you think the water pump is leaking?

It's pretty simple a proceedure, but no, it does not involve disturbing the timing belt*.
It will involve removing the left motor mount?, the drive belts and anything else which gets in the way.

Now may be a good time to talk about the Shop Repair Manual lecture

Oh, don't worry about a balancer belt... it wasn't an issue until 1990, with the introduction of the F22a/b Engine family.

The water pump detail gives you some idea of what you'll be looking at also.

It's because of the very reason, most shops suggest replacing the pump whenever doing a timing belt job (and visa-versa).

You should familiarize yourself well with regards to timing the Belt (aligning the sprockets) before you attempt this.

Up to 89 accords you don't have to touch the timing belt to replace the water pump,,,,,the water pump is driven by the alternator belt....
starting 90 accords the pump is driven by the timing belt........

you don't even have to remove the timing belt covers,, all you have to do is loosen up the rt side bolts on the upper and lower t-belt covers , pull back on covers a little, so that the water pump can slide off easier .
probably the hardest thing to do is to remove the stud for the alt bracket, to do so, just double nut it , and remove it..
