Can I safely tow 2,000 lb with a 2005 Accord 4 cyl, manual transmission? As far as I know the manual says I can only tow 1,000 lb, however I cannot understand why the rating is so low. In Europe most people tow around 2-3000 lb travel trailers with Accords, Camry's, Passat's, etc. And they usually only have 1.8-2 litre engines. Why doe we need big SUV's or trucks to tow the same trailer in North America? I would truly appreciate if someone can enlighten me on this issue. I don;t really care if it voids the warranty, I am just curious if it is safe, or not, and whether a European Honda Accord (sold here as the Acura TSX) is all that different.

I have just been able to verify that in Europe the Accord is allowed to tow 1,500 kg - around 3,500 lb with the standard 2.0 litre, 155 hp engine.

this one is from another country. Given the weight of the car, I would NEVER TOW 3500lbs that is more than what the accord weighs. Honda would not tell you that it is OK to tow more than a certain percentage of a cars weight.

BTW I think their towing weight is wrong

they list a tounge weight of 75Kg (165lbs) and that is supposed to be 20% of the trailer weight. (based on us accord specs)

Your accord only weighs in at an average of 1400kg so again I think the number is towing in lbs not Kg. I believe that the safe towing weight of your car is somewhere around 460kg (1000lbs) and that would be right for a car that tips in at about 3100 lbs

Since the Acura TSX is the same car I looked up the towing capacity and it is 1000lbs

There is no way I can believe that the brakes on the euro accord (acura TSX) can safely stop 6000+lbs of car........not to mention the clutch in the manual trans being able to handle it....

The tow rating og 1500 KG, not LB is from the official Honda Accord brochure, I downloaded the brochure from Honda Denmark. The Acura TSX is the exact same car as the Honda Accord, except that the model imported to North America has around 200hp.

I grew up in Europe, I used to tow a 2500 LB travel trailer all around Europe in a 1983 Toyota Camry with 1.8 litre engine, 90 hp, no problems with the clutch or anything else for that matter. I should be said though that those trailers in Europe are fitted with brakes.

Europeans dont have big trucks or SUV's so they tow with what they have, which is 4 cyl. sedan's.

Don't say you wern't warned when your car dies due to a toasted clutch........I know what the specs said I read them and that is why I said I THINK THEY ARE WRONG......
