Default shifting the auto

I have always been a girl. at I am always racing. i love the feeling of blasting down the street knowing at any moment i could be hit with blue lights- but for the love of God, I couldn't esacpe them. I need some serious help. I've got- obviously, an 89 Lxi coupe. the only mods i have are enkei etoria 14s (it was a mistake, i know) wrapped in toyo proxes-h rated, a k&n air filter, mock HIDs and a streetracing.com banner- i know it doesn't make the car go any faster, but i'm representing so shut up. my car is sadly, a four speed with auto tranny. i need to know how to shift to gain more speed A LOT faster. i keep up with my friend's 98 integra (also an auto) until the car shifts into third and then he's gone. i'm ready to surprise him, now what in the heck do i do??

Welcome for more GAL
1)you cant really shift an automatic tranny, just grab a atf cooler and inline filter to slow down the long death of the tranny.

i really am not looking into spending anything right now. i got ran off the road and into the mailbox from hell last week and it's peeling $1200 out of my pocket that i don't have. thank you so much for replying- help me in any way you can.

I don't know if it's the same thing he's talking about, but you can mess around with the TV cable (throttle valve cable) to change the shift points to make it hold each gear a little longer. At least thats the way it was explained to me

your car will not be fast. you seem to accept this already. Bring it back to stock, sell it, and buy a better platform to work with.

Yes, I have come to terms with the fact that my car isn't up to speed but here's my deal. Since I was very small, I have grown up around cars and this was the car I have always wanted, the year, make and model- everything. 89k, tan leather interior, moonroof (it's glass), monterey metallic green, and it was a one owner car before me and garaged every day of its life. i am sick of the played out fourth and fifth gens. Everyone since the fast and the furious is grabbing their mom's civic and revving up all over the place and it's so freakin old. especially to those of us who have been into the scene for years-they make us all look like chumps who go with the trend. A third gen is something different- it's more of a challenge and it's not overdone -though it's a rapidly spreading idea- it's not as bad as other gens. do you konw what i mean.

Yeah but you dug yourself into a hole seeing as how there is very little aftermarket support for such a honda. If I had to start over with hondas I would have to go with a civic or integra simply because there are cheap, plentiful parts out there for them.

You want to "short shift" your transmission by using the dedents built into the shifter mechanism. For maximum acceleration you need to shift at that point in the power curve where torque is at it's maximum. Since you are dealing with an automatic you need to upshift to the next higher gear a few hundred rpm's before max torque. With a little experimentation you should be able to figure out when that would be. Honda's are high revving but max torque would probably be 70 to 80 percent of that. Maybe the manual gives these figures. Good luck "shifting"

Come on guys, lets not take her comment the wrong way. You know what she meant, and you know that she is right. Not saying at all that 4th, 5th, or 6th gens are bad or anything in any way because they're not, you simply see them all over the place. Tons of peeps hook up 4th-6th gens, similar to the 'cookie cutter' Civics. Why? Just like Brian said, there's plenty of cheap aftermarket parts to mod them up the wazoo. You rarely ever see a 3rd gen hooked up. Lack of aftermarket support? Yes. Hopeless? Absolutely not! Some people, like myself, like to be a little different from everyone else and actually enjoy the challenge of being original and modifying a car with little help from the aftermarket (I know, sounds funny coming from someone with a completely stock car, lol. I'm workin on it ). Sure, there's some parts and **** you just can't do yourself, but that's where you put the ol' noodle to work and be creative with your imagination. The small amount of aftermarket stuff that there is available for 3rd gens is enough to get started with anyways, if you choose to do so. I'm not hating on other gens of Accords or Civics. I love them all, honestly. I'm just stating a simple fact. She's obviously partial to the 3rd gen that she has (just like me), and wants to keep it and go from there. Why get something newer/different just for aftermarket support when you know you're not going to be happy with it? If you're going to spend time and money modifying a car, it might as well be the car you really like and want to modify, right? Makes sense

So lets just answer the simple question at hand, instead of right off the bat just saying "go get a new car! so you can buy the same parts everybody else does". Try to understand the point I'm getting at here....

btw, max torque is 122 ft. lbs @ 4000 rpm . Don't get a new car, the one you have is just fine

Well when I had my 6th gen Accord V6 auto there was a very easy way to make it decently quick off the line but it is extra wear and tear on the transmission. Here is how you do it.

When you get to the line where you are going to race (hopefully this is at the track and not street racing) put your left foot on the brake petal and push it all the way to the floor

Next push on the gas petal and try to bring the engine up to around 2000 rpms maybe a little higher since yours is a 4 cylinder but it probably wont be able to rev past 2500rpms.

When the light turns green pull your left foot off the brake as fast as possible and floor the gas petal kinda like you would do with a clutch.

This technique got me a 15.61@87mph in my totally stock Accord V6 Sedan which had an Auto. Stock they are supposed to pull around a 16.0@86 or somewhere there about.

Edit: I wouldnt bother shifting the tranny as it doesnt make you any faster. Unless you are going and doing a high speed run in which case I would put the car in D3 till you hit redline than shift to D4.

are you mechanically inclined? find a manual tranny from a junkyard and swap it in, they cant be that expensive, 3rd gen accords are 13+ years old

for those of you who can't understand what i'm saying about the other gens, don't bother posting-i'm not here to ask you whether or not you like your car and i'm not telling you your particular car is played out. i'll drool over a nice 4th or 5th gen any day. it's just not for me. i do alright with work on the car, but i don't think i'd go as far as trying to swap the tranny- i know plenty of people who could if that would be a better solution. do you really think so?

AEM make fuel rails and fuel pressure regulators for the LX-i and the SE-i. And i think Pacestter Monza make a cat-back exhaust for ur 3rd gen accords. but im not sure.

yeah- it's really tough to find parts-ANY after market, and hardly any salvaged. Get this- if I want clear corners, I must make them myself. So, I know I'm in WAY over my head but I can't be picky-it was, after all, exactly what I asked for-I just didn't realize what a mixed blessing it would be. My uncle bought me the car and we're trying desperately to do all we can.It gets so frustrating to get lists on after market parts and see that 99% of the companies only offer 1990 and up. I have to find parts off other cars, like the 1st gen CRX or legend half of the time.

sounds like you have an SE-i not an LXi.
SE-i's came in either dark grey (with gray leather [or black?]) or the metallic green (with tan leather).
