I once broke a 1/2" breaker bar and a couple 1/2" ratchets while using an aluminum pipe from my jack to try and loosen the driver side axle nut. What ended up doing it and has worked ever since is using a 1/2" breaker bar with a 5-6ft steel pipe. Don't use a light weight pipe, make sure it's a heavy pipe that wont bend.

and what I usually do when loosening the axle nuts is I leave the car on the ground and remove the center cap of the rim, that way I don't need to worry about someone holding the brakes or the brakes not being able to hold.

Shoo... I got myself a 3/4" drive & 40" tall breaker bar to break the nut loose. That should do the trick.

honestly, your best bet is to leave the nut as is, then get a big f'n hammer, (preferably 3 lb. or more) and hit the end of the axle, then hit the "hat" portion of the rotor (not the part the pads come in contact with), and repeat back and forth, then try the breaker bar again. it should come off, if not, then try heating it up with a propane torch and hitting it with a hammer than. if none of what i have just described has worked, lemme know.

I don't see how hitting the end of the axle or the rotor is going to help with loosening the axle nut.

and btw, the rotor "hat" isn't the part the pads touch, it's the part that connects with the hub.

Ok, hitting the end of it with a large hammer sends a vibration though it, therefore breaking it free from the rust and/or from being stuck on the threads due to expanding and contracting from high heat. I used to use this method all the time as a boat mechanic and a car mechanic. It's not a "hit it harder and see if that works" method. That's why it works better when you reciprocate your hits back and forth.

And btw, I aready said that, if you noticed, I said the "hat" is the part that the pads "DO NOT" come in contact with.

I just did a brake job and had the same problem. I used a 1/2" drive wrench with a 3' breaker bar. But I had to stand on the bar and bounce on it. BTW I weigh about 200lbs. Good luck

all of the guys above are right about the breaker bar and such.

but what impact were you using? honestly. i have taken these things off multiple times on different honda's including 4th and 5th gen accords. and they always come off. Under 10 seconds.

Ingersoll Rand Impact Gun. 1/2 " drive. Done and done.

I'm not mouthing off, or tryin to be a smart ***, just tryin to clarify that he read it wrong, and that i'm not a dumb ***. I've put in more than my fair share of time workin on just about every honda, so just tryin to help someone out that's fresh out of ideas. My bad though TouringAccord. it may have been confusing the way i explained it, but i tried to be as detailed as i could cuz i didn't know how much experience the person asking the question was.

older accords have some seriously insane inboard rotors. whoever designed that was on something illegal.

the easiest [temporary] option is to take it to a shop with an on-car lathe.

90-97 Accords came with a style referred to as hub-over-rotor. Basically the rotor is bolted to the back of the hub requiring the hub/bearing assembly be removed from the knuckle to replace the rotors. For more info on these brakes, see the FAQ.

I dod mine on my 93 accord. They sucked!!!!!! I used an impact gun to get the axle nut off. It worked like a charm. Just be careful.

yes, you can swap in a rotor-over-hub (ROH) setup. Look in the FAQ for your different options (ROH with stock caliper and rotor size or ROH with larger caliper and larger rotor)

This is what every honda accord owner should buy when they do a brake job for the first time in thier 90-97 Accord. This will save you alot of trouble and broken tools lol... Too bad i'm getting rid of my accord and wont able to do this.

90-97 ROTOR-OVER-HUB FRONT BRAKE CONVERSION (NISSIN)
This kit will convert your 90-97 pressed-on style front brakes to a standard, easy to work with slide-on rotor set-up. 90-97 Accords have pressed-on rotors that make replacing them very difficult because specialty tools are required. Make future brake jobs far easier and more cost effective. Comes with the bearing already pressed onto the hub for easy installation

Fits Nissin style calipers on 2dr/4dr 4cyl Accords. Does not fit V6 or Wagon models.

I never understood that idea behind this design, last time it took me 5 hours without any power tools. All I had is help from a friend. I allways wanted to find that person who thought this design was a good idea, and make him do my brake job lol...
