Removed back speaker mounts to find 6x9's??!?!?!
I have a 92 Accord EX 4-door. I have been preparing to install my speakers for months now. I managed to finally get the tools to remove the back speaker mounts, only to find a pair of 6x9's on the back deck. What is going on?! I have done a fit check on the 6.5" speakers I want to mount and have been told that they will fit. Did anyone run into this problem? I can't mount 6.5" speakers in a 6x9 hole! Did Honda make the Accord with different options for speakers in 1992? I have heard of a Bose sound system or something, but I am pretty sure mine doesn't have that. Also, are the front speakers going to be 6x9's as well? Please, someone help. I am uber pissed. I go to crutchfield to verify that my speakers will indeed fit in the back, and they said it was fine. I need some help here or I am going to go crazy. Thanks in advance.

Fronts are 6.5s. I've seen a few 4th gens with 6x9s, so I'm assuming it was either a factory option, or standard equipment on EX's after a certain year.

yup, 6.5 in the front 4 sure. I've got a 95' lx and I have a cut out to mount 6x9, but I have 6.5 in the back with a bracket (factory). I guess Accords did come with an option of a speaker size.
Dont worry 6x9 are better anyways. Go with Infinity, I love the clearity and sound of mine.

Ok, first off I can't believe that you've been preparing for months, and you never actually took a look at the speakers themselves. Secondly, you guys who said that the fronts are 6.5" need to do some research because your incorrect for the specifications he gave you. Heres the correct information:
Q- what size are the front speakers?
A- DX/LX= 6.5" EX/SE= 5"
Q- What's the maximum depth my front speakers can be?
A- 2-1/8"
Q- What size are the rear speakers?
A- DX/LX= 6.5" EX/SE= 6x9"
Q- what's the maximum depth my rear speakers can be?
A- DX/LX= 2-3/4" EX/SE= 3-3/4"
With that said. You can put 6.5" speakers all the way around. Trust me I have done it. In the fronts you have to pull the plastic baffels, and use MDF to create a mounting ring. As for the rears, all you need to do, is take a piece of 1/4" MDF (you can use thicker and just sand it down) and trace the 6x9 speaker shape onto the MDF. Then cut out a circle in the middle of that piece that the 6.5" will fit into. Then all you need to do is drill holes where the factory screws went and put everything back together. Trust me, the 6.5" speakers will fit in the 6x9" hole!!

my brothers 92 ex has 6.5s in the back as well..ive never seen an accord of that generation with 6x9s in the back...although like some ppl said it could have been an option for that model...if I were you I would take the speakers back and tell them they told you the wrong size and get them swapped out

The speaker pods are interchangeable. Its very possible that they were swapped at one time. All I know is that from the factory, the 92 Accord EX is supposed to have 6x9" speakers and 5" in the front.

How sure are you on the EX size? I've done 3 installs on 4th gen Accord EX's, and each one had 6.5s in the front. I don't remember the years though. I've never heard of a an Accord having 5" speakers. Even my '88 had 6.5s.

Are you guys sure they were EX's? EX's have alloys and a factory sunroof. Anyways I have a 93 EX and it had weird 4"s in a plastic enclosure and 6x9's in the back. Right now I have 7"s in the front and Nissan Altima Clarion 6x9's in the back...sounds pretty good but it clips early with my shitty amp...
But yea...EX/SE's are supposed to have 6x9s in the back.

Re: Removed back speaker mounts to find 6x9's??!?!?! (sportyaccordy)
Ok, lets clarify a bit more. The 4th Gen EX have this big black baffel thing which holds the <U>5"</U> stock speakers. However this can be taken out to reveal the opening for a 6.5" speaker. However unless you have very shallow magnets, you will need to make a mounting ring out of wood.

It doesn't matter for the back deck anyway. I admit that 1) the highs are going to be too much with two sets of components and 2) there is no good place to put tweeters in the back seat. I am selling the 6.5 component set and using the money for a pair of Infinity Kappa 693.7i 6x9's (or, if you have a suggestion for an even better pair of 6x9's I'm open to it). I have heard some great things about those Infinity's though. I am selling my 6.5's on ebay. Check out the auction here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...&rd=1

I'll vouch for the non 6.5" speakers. I was the same way with the 4" or 5" or whatever it was in the front, 6X9 in the back. I had no idea that there was a 6.5" mount behind that black plastic baffle. I just ghetto installed my front 6.5" speakers by making holes through the plastic baffle.
Maybe I'll go by some MDF in a couple of weeks and make myself nice new baffles to hold 'em in. I've been pondering what I could do to open 'em up considering the speakers are halfway covered by the door panel.
