Default Project CB7 - 56K dont bother.

FINIALLY UPDATED!! PAGE 3!!

Well, I decided that I want to share the progress of my car with you guys.
My plans for the car is to make it a weekend warrior. It will be my daily driver and autox monster on weekends. Thus far, i've been working to get the car road worth again. I purchased this car from a co-worker, and it has been sitting at his house for a while, and I have finially had time to get started.

The bodywork is now finshed, and the only upgrades that have been made at this point is a rotor over hub conversion. (if your interested, I have a DIY on that) As well as an aftermarket stereo, the car didnt come with one. Nothing major, just an Alpine head unit, Type r 6 1/2's in the front doors, type r 6x9's in the rear deck, an alpine amp (400rms at 2Ohms) powering an Infinity 10" sub.

I have a Suspension Techniques sway bar kit that I have yet to install, and an Energy suspension polyurathane bushing kit to go in as well. I'm currently waiting on my Bilstien shocks and H&R springs to arrive. I plan to do a massive DIY for a total suspension upgrade, as well as show you guys how to do a proper 4 wheel alignment on a rack so you all know whats involved. So, enough of my rant, and onto the pics.

Pics of when I first got the car.

Then, I started to dismantel the car.

Then, I started to do the bodywork, one panel at a time. The side moulding were also shaved, but it was kind of a toss up. I think it looks ok, but nothing spectacular. Just a little diffrent from every other cb7 out there.

Thats all for now. I gonna keep this updated all the time, since I am always workin on my car. So, lemme know what you guys think so far?

I would like to paint it black, but I dont want to half *** the paintjob, so its just gonna stay white for now. The bodywork is actuially done now and the car is in full primer, I just need to load up the pics. i'm putting it on the road next thursday 19/07/07. Thats when the real fun is going to start.

Believe it or not, engine heat, wd-40 and a stiff bush. I would let the engine run so it would heat up, also to let the parts lube up again from there long slumber from storage and spray the bay down with wd-40 or any kind of penetrating lube that I could steal from work. I slowly worked everything and it took 90% of the rust off. The only thing that I have changed in the bay was the rad because it was rotten and the alternator, because the windings were fucked and it wouldent charge.

Other then that, I cleaned the rust off every little part. OH, and I painted the valve cover and heat sheild.

Thanks, i'm not a very patient person, and when I want something, its all I can focus on. i've stayed up all night sanding the car just because, and went to work the next morning...its kinda crazy now that I think about it.

tomorrow I will take current pics of how she stands now. And keep in mind, this is just the begining. This was only to get the car preped so it could be presentable. Next stage is the fun part.

I primerd the car in my garage, but primer isnt a big deal. I have painted my other cars in my garage before (92 civic coupe, 88 Jetta, 94 teg) with mixed results. I am by no means a painter. i'm a grease monkey by trade, so I just like to try new things. I have convinced myself that if I spray the car myself, its going to look like crap, so I plan to outsource the paint job to one of my friends. so far, i'm looking at about $600 CDN for a decent paint job. They are going to wash the car, scuff it, mask it, shoot 3 coats of base clear (Championship white, instead of frost white) and 3 coats of clear coat. I feel that the price is fair, this is a pretty reputable guy. I probably wont have it painted for about 3-4 weeks though, so you guys are gonna have to wait for those pics

All the rust in the tail gate was sand blasted away till it was all clean metal, then I fiberglassed it in. The rear quarters however were too far gone, so I had a friend who works at a duct work factory mend me up a couple pieces. So, I suppose, to answer the question, its half and half.

Thank you. I have a cd5 with the usual cancer. Do you think it would be ok to mig a thin thing of sheet metal in after getting it sandblasted? I'm 16 so money is a little tight with Burger King being my sponsor. Or would all Bondo be a better fix?

If your tight for money, I would just use fibergalss. Bondo on its own isnt strong enough to actuially make a new rear quarter in my experience. It will crack and fall out no matter what. your best bet is to use fiberglass sheets and build behind the hole(after the rust has been removed) and then use the figerglass bondo. Thats bascially bondo with strings of fiberglass in it to make it stronger. sand it all smooth, and if you need to, add a skin coat of regular bondo over it just to get it baby smooth.

However, since your only 16, you have time to do it right. I wouldent mig weld the panel in, I would just use rivits or body panel adheisive. I used the adhesive because its just easier to work with after. Rivits need to be recessed and such. Welding can warp the sourrounding metal if you are not careful, thats why I dont recommend it. I know that personally, I dont have experience welding sheet metal to a car, so I didnt want to risk it. I'll keep my welding limited to fabrication of mechanical things

Thanks alot. I have never heard of body panel adhesive, where can it be found and what's a good brand? Sorry for all the questions, I've been searching tasauto.com and every other website for Accord parts, my brain is about battered. So much for summer vacation

I used SEM brand body panel adhesive, I ordred it from our local jobber at work, so I guess most auto supply stores will have it? 3M also makes a good adhesive i'm told. But, I have never used it, so I have no input on that. We mostly use 3m stuff at work, so I guess it would be good. They make good quality products for a fair price.

I should also mention, when you buy bodyfiller, look for a light weight, no clogging easy sand body filler. Unless you have an air or electric sander your gonna hate your car. I did my whole car by hand because my compressor cant handel my air sander

I have an electric sander I can use. I also have some damage that needs to be pulled, which I will show when I start my thread tomorrow. Thank you for all the help.

mig welding = good skill to learn. i learned it when i took an auto collision repair class.

welding sheet metal to a body frame = headache, depending on where you're welding..personally, i wouldn't do it unless i had a light touch..because like jdm said..you can warp the hell out of your body.

it's good that everyone is doin summer projects, i think sooner or later everyone will have a thread

True. I learned how to weld thin stuff with the MIG with my dad, and I learned to stick weld in school. Like JDM_DC4 said, I'm not trying to have a chance to warp anything

I guess you dont work in a garage Even though I hate the way is was, I would gladly work in there then some of the crap that rolls onto my hoist.

Lets just say, one time I found a bird in a catalytic converter, and a squirrel stuck into a power steering rack....those are just a few fine examples of some of the cars I work on.
