Power door locks not working on 97 accord

Re: (civicandy)
Thanks for posting this! Now I can fix my other actuator without spending another $100. I just wish I would have known this before I fixed the first one.
Thanks again!

I took my pictures from this link. But his repair was different than mine. It appears that he did not fix what I fixed. But it must have worked somehow. Here's what I did. This was done on on my drivers rear door. The problem I had is that when I hit the switch on the front drivers door, it wouldn't unlock my rear door. And when I would lock all the doors, I would here the motor running and making a grinding noise. Hope this helps some of you. It cost $.05 for the screw to fix it.
See on the right where there is a black spring? That is supposed to be under the little piece of white plastic. The white plastic breaks, and then the spring is not compressed. You need to compress the spring.
What I did is circled in white. The purple arrow points to where the white plastic should be capping off the spring opening. The spring sits in a hole. The little blue line shows roughly where to top of the white cap should be. The red indicates where I put a screw. Predrill a hole, then use a small self drilling screw to go through the yellow plastic. The screw needs to be long enough to go all the way through the yellow, to push on white piece of plastic. (Approximatly where the blue line is) Either reuse the white plastic spring cap, or make something to fit between the spring and the point of the screw. Go slow. Don't over tighten the screw or you will strip out the plastic.

When I lock it from outside the car, same thing happens. They all make the noise like they are trying to lock. Well the drivers side is the only one that goes down but thats cuz im turning the key to manually lock it.

Re: (dohctor_B)
these actuators in the link below is what we have always used no matter what car its going in... cheap and effective
very simple to install too. the hardest part of the install is taking off the interior of the door, and bending the rod to make it parallel to the existing locking rod. nothing an average DIY'er cant handle.
i have a coupe like muffin man so i jst got 2 new ones for both doors when one starting the infamous buzz. but no probs since my install and its been well over 3-4 years ago !! knowing my luck mine will go out tonight

I had the same problem with my '96 Accord 4-door. The local Honda dealership in Omaha quoted a price of $212.00 for the driver's side door lock actuator!! I went to a junkyard and got a driver's door lock actuator out of a '97 Acura TL (identical part) for $7.00. I brought a 12VDC power supply and was able to test it on site prior to purchasing it, and it cycled fine. The rubber bumpers sometimes wear down, but the one out of the Acura was in good shape. I replaced it in my '96 Accord about three months ago, and no problems since. No more recycling noise anymore when I'm driving with the doors locked, or have parked the car and locked it.

So was this all your door locks that were malfunctioning or just one?
Btw, thanx for that ebay site Neke. I saw those on there and was wondering if they were any good. Definately a good price

Sorry, wasn't clear in my initial post. I had two separate issues with the power door locks on my '96 Accord. The pax rear door made a whirring sound while the car was being driven, so I replaced that specific actuator. That problem went away, but the door locks would still recycle, like they were trying to lock themselves. Once I replaced the driver's door actuator (the used one I got out of an Acura), it solved that problem. Since that point, I've had no more problems with the door locks, so I'm assuming the other two (right front and left rear door lock actuators) are ok (for the time being anyway ).

Door lock issue, but is it the same problem?
Hi Everyone. I've read the site and I have a similar problem, though not the same.
My '90 Accord EX 4-door is having problems with the door locks. I noticed it first several months back. I was driving with my 5-year old in the front seat and the door locks started to engage (lock) several times. I thought she was pushing the button, so I looked over - but she was sitting there nicely and not touching anything. I wasn't sure why it happened, but it has occurred a number of times since then.
At one point, I unlocked the passenger side door using the key and put some items on the front seat. I then unlocked all doors using the passenger side switch, then walked around to the driver's side. When I got there, all the doors were locked!
In addition, sometimes the power lock switches don't work at all. You can press either or both to lock or unlock and nothing occurs.
Now this last week I went to put something into the trunk and noticed the light was *very* dim, so I am thinking the battery may have an issue, but it is new from May 2007. Since I wasn't going anywhere, I didn't do anything then. This weekend (Saturday) I went to start the car and the battery is *completely* dead. Not even a whisper of light from dome light.
So I get the charger out and hook it up, then plug it in and turn it on. As soon as it is turned on, I hear the doors lock and a humming sound from every door!
It's as if someone is holding the lock switch down and all the doors are humming. In addition, there is a clicking sound coming from the dash area (sounds like it's behind the radio or up a bit higher near the rear-winder defroster and emergency switches. As soon as I turn off the charger, it goes away. Turn it back on and again, all the doors lock (and cannot be unlocked by hand) and the humming and clicking begins again.
I think whatever is causing the doors to lock and the humming is what caused the battery to drain.
I don't know if this sounds like anyone else's symptoms or not, but I am not sure what the problem could be here. I could disassemble the door(s) and check the actuators, but I'm just not sure it's the same symptoms.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks. I looked at the one on ebay, but I really don't want to put in an after-market actuator and try to make it work. I guess I'm still not sure if that is my problem or not.
Thanks!

Hi Secret Chimp:
I'm having the same problem with my door locks "locking" over and over again. Now they seem to be stuck in their attempt to lock and they have drained my battery. When I hook up my charger, all 4 doors lock and begin to hum like they are trying to continue "locking" the doors.
Did you get your issue fixed (which sounds a lot like mine)? If so, what did you finally find to correct?
Thanks,
Dave

i got the replacement part(the small black rubber boot) from a junkyard. i spent the time to take out the actuator from the door just to take that small black piece.

Re: Power door locks not working on 97 accord (brose)
How did you figure out how to get the interior door panel off? This is my problem. Is there any online site or place to buy a manual? I don't want to wreck the trim or door getting to the actuator. Thanks!

Re: Power door locks not working on 97 accord (lpluke)
My locks also lock repeatedly. They at one time unlocked repeatedly too but stopped doing that. Usually locking the door triggers it, but sometimes it will do it for no reason. Used to scare the heck out of people walking by!
It's some wierd whirring noise - when I read that I knew exactly what you meant!
So will this actuator thing fix it? My mom said my lock motors were broken and it would be $300 (what her Honda dealer charged to fix it!).
Anyone in Mpls that would wanna do it for me?

Re: Power door locks not working on 97 accord
My Driver-side rear lock makes a grinding noise when I lock the car - but not unlock it - and no recycling. It all started when the weather turned cold. Does everyone think this is just the actuator, or could the weather have something to do with it, and if I wait it out, warm weather will bring with it a quiet door?
