ok ok, i have a 97 accord LX, i purchased the car in july, changed the oil/filter. no leaks until about 1,000 miles were ran on it.

here is my concern. the filter i took off was a honda filter, which im hoping wasn't the factory one seeing that there is 108,000 miles on the car. but anywhoo... i wen to my local pepboys and told them my make and model and they gave me this filter that was at least a inch bigger in diameter. it was leaking once, so i put a silicone seal around the filter, and it stopped leakin for about a week, and now its back leaking again. can anyone tell me a)the proper oil filter size, and b) just anything else that can help me stop this tiny, but a could-be major problem.

Solution:

Go to Advanced Auto Parts, look up the filter size yourself

I use Mobil 1 filters and I believe it's like M-104 or something along those lines.

You also realize you can purchase Honda oil filters right? It's not like they come on the car then you can never use another Honda filter. Just means it was last serviced at a place that stocks Honda filters.

Also majority of Honda's use the same size filter.

i know that u can purchuase honda filters, but the kid i bought it off mmust not of changed the oil, the oil was black as night just after a 1,000 miles. but that doesnt explain why the filter that was on there was so much smaller in diamter?

Different brands......

Also oil color doesn't tell you everything about the quality of the oil, just because it's black doesn't mean it's broken down.

alright , so wuld u recoomend just doin a cplete oil change or just replace the filter?

Just do the whole thing? If you're in there might as well do it.

Even Honda OEM filters have different diameters. From a description for the Honda OEM filter from http://www.handa-accessories.com :

For what it's worth, I only use factory filters (Honda / Toyota) on my cars, they aren't expensive ($5 or so) and if it's good enough for the dealer mechanics - it's good enough for me.

Anyway... maybe it's possible that when you took off the old filter a little bit of gasket remained, stuck to the car? That could (would?) cause a leak on the new filter.

this has happened to me before. this is the first thing i would check.

That's what I was thinking. It might be that the old gasket is stuck on, or a part of it at least. Change the filter and when you have it off, check to make sure there's nothing on the surface where the filter goes onto the engine.

no i shuld of mentiond that before, the gasket from the previous filter was totaly removed. but do any stores sell honda filters? or can i buy one from a dealership?
