Default Oil

I need to put oil in my accord (5w-30). At Autozone Castrol Syntec and a bunch of other brands (cant remember which exactly) were all $4.89. Pennzoil was $2.89. Is Pennzoil that much worse or is it alright. I wouldnt normally care about a difference that size, but I am poor and out of work for the winter, and trying to make it to March without begging too much off my parents. Thx.

Castrol Syntec is a synthetic oil. That's why it's more expensive. I don't care for Pennzoil myself but it should be fine for you car. Still $2.89 for regular Pennzoil seems kinda high. Might want to check out Wal-Mart or some store like that.

From what I have read on other forums (VW TDI for one), the Castrol Syntec is really simply a blend,NOT a true "synthetic".
The oils were rated; the Castrol is very good; the Mobil One , Amsoil, RedLine are excellent.
For some reason, Pennzoil is rated as one of the very worst !!

But I have been using many different oils for 40 years, never had any trouble with any
But then I change often and do not race.
Your oil prices in Massachusetts (I guess that is your state) seem to be very high, much higher than Pennsylvania prices.
I buy mine at Wal-Mart, replacing K-Mart - they seem to be going under..
Autozone sells some junk; and their prices are a bit high !

Good point on the stores. I'll check Wal-Mart and Napa tomorrow on the way home. Thx.

I ahve heard from a mechanic freind of mine that Pennzoil is like putting sand into your engine. I have been doing some searchs in the Internet for Oil Filters recently, and came across a Pennzoil thread. I guess they have some kind of "cleaner" that your engine gets used to and if you stop using Pennzoil it can cause your rings to dry out. I am not excatly shure if this is the case, I am not a mechanic.

Check this forum about Oil, there is a lot of useful info here.
