Default Need Help 86 Honda Accord ?

I have an 86 Honda Accord. The problem I am having is with the idle. In the morning the engine will kick down just fine. But once the engine is warm, when you start it, it will idle at 2k and will not kick down until you shift into gear.

I also have a problem with a burning oil smell. I have traced the leak down to somewhere around the oil filter. There is a hose or oil line ?? there that has been replaced twice, but hasn't fixed the oil leak.

Any help with these two problems would be greatly appreciated.

sorry if this is the wrong forum for these questions.

hrmmm. I guess this is the wrong place for basic questions? Could some at least guide me to a forum or section of this discussion board that may be able to address these problems?

TIA

take te oil filter off and clean around that area and see if there are any craks..... also take some fine sand (1000 grit) paper and clean the area where the oil filter seals on the blick.

clean area with a terry cloth

make sure you do not have any oil leaks from the valve cover gasket

he is right, a lot of build up occurs around where the filter seals to the block

still check out all of your gaskets though

your idle problem sounds like idle valve is sticking, basically when you put it in gear it is coming undone

it could also be a vacuum issue though, let me look at a few things and get back to you on that

Thanks for the above replies. I will be checking this thread for more tips. The oil filter is changed with every oil change, and the area where the oil filter seals is cleaned with break cleaner and a clean shop towel. Break cleaner cleans it up good. Though, I have to say I've never inspected it for cracks. I'll have to do that.

I also got a reply on a Jeep forum I frequent. This person said that Honda has 3 different filter types for the 4cylinder engine. He recommended replacing the current WIX filter with a filter purchased from the Honda dealer. Im going to give that a try aswell. Do any of you know if there is a known problem with using third party filters?

Thanks again.

The idle problem sounds like it may be the temp sensor -- on Hondas, they frequently die "cold." They'll start out at around .5V for a cold engine. As the coolant warms up, the voltage will rise until it hits about 4.5V to 5V for a fully warmed up engine.

THEN, for some reason, they'll go back "cold" again, putting out .5V, even though the engine is warmed up. The car's usually pretty hard to re-start when this happens, cuz the ECU will try to flood the engine. If they DO start, it'll be at "cold idle" speed.

Another possibility is a sticky IAC valve.

if you are using brake cleaner you NEED to make sure you use some alcohol to remove the brake cleaner residue as that stuff eats rubber for lunch

you got a vaccum leak for sure if you put the car in gear and it goes away

Is the car a carb. or fuel injected? If it is carb. then you need to adjust the fast idle when the car is hot.. You will need to buy a manual for the car, a hayes will work just fine, but a Honda one is better..

Here is a possible fix I found on http://www.deja.com for the high idle. I have no chilton or tech manual in front of me to verify this to be accurate.

"It turned out to be what they call a purge vacuum valve that broke. Since Paul's manual is for 88 Accord and my Chilton manual is not very clear, I can only suspect this is actually called thermovalve A (hose #18 and #19 on one side, #17 on the other). "

As for the oil leak, I will find out tomorrow if the honda filter fixes that. Im hoping it does. While I have the filter off I am also going to do the suggested and check for cracks or anything that would cause an improper seal.

This particular Honda is carburated
