Default Just bought a 93 Accord for a daily beater. Need a few questions answered

I just purchased a 93 honda accord yesterday for a daily driver/winter beater.

Like all older cars it as a few issues but no big deal. Maybe some are common problems and fixes.

1) When I turn the wheel to a certain point I get a squeaking/squealing noise.
I know what you're thinking but its not a dry power steering squeak or squeal.

2)Gas pedal sticks. LOL! I can pull it out with my foot, otherwise in Neutral it will stick and stay at about 2k rpms. No big deal, just kind of bad on gas mileage. I the spring and cables w/ degreaser and WD-40 today and it helped a little bit, but it still sticks. Anyway to adjust this?

3) Anyway to adjust idle? Car idles a bit too low and has a slight vibration to it like its going to stall. What should it idle at? At ~900rmps it is butter smooth.

4)Gas gauge is a little loopy. Fluctuates greatly during driving. Normal or not?

5) How do you check the trans fluid on the automatic gear box? I didn't see a dip stick. Not sure if there is supposed to be one, but I looked briefly and didn't see one.

I come from BMW's so go easy on any Honda slang.

I mught be able to help u with a couple things: first the pedal sticking may be fixed if u loosen upo the tension on the throttle cable a lil bit. As for the idle theres a idle adjustment screw on top of the throttle body to the left of the red vacuum line, just don't go crazy with it a slight turn should make a drastic change. And the trans has a dipstick if ur looking down at the motor its on the left kinda hidden by the lower radiator hose its yellow. Hope that helps u somewhat. Welcome tp Honda's

Thanks. Is there a fill bottle anywhere for the transmission?

im not sure i always pour in through the vehicle speed sensor located near the back of the tranny. Your gonna need a long extension to get to it and only remove the 10mm that holds the sensor to the tranny then just remove it and use a long funnel to put fluid in.

alright first the squealing you hear when you turn might be pump whine.does it do it when the wheel is turned all the way or while you turn? second the gas pedal sticking might be your throttle body butterfly sticking.a little throttle body cleaning with a brush and some cleaner you can get at your parts store. there is an idle adjustment screw on the throtttlebody itself. gas gauge prob might be your float in your in tank sending unit. sorry so lengthy but i figure some of this knowledge i have from working as a Honda tech for some years might be of help.good luck

if your car is a manual then you fill it from underneath on the side of the tranny.manuals don't have dipsticks.if its an auto fill it through the dipstick tube.it should be on the left side near the back if a remember correctly.

its only at a certain spot when turning do I get the squeak/squeal. After I pass that one point either turning, left or right, or when I'm going back to center. There is just one certain spot which is just a few degrees off center when turning. it will squeal/squeak if I hold it there, but if i turn past that point it goes away. On a long sweeper I only turn a little bit and the sound persists the whole turn.

Its not a power steering noise. I'll make a video of it sometime.

Possibly a loose belt? Pump resistance changes depending on certain variables. Fill the trans through the dipstick hole.

Idle vibration likely a faulty rear motor mount.

There is an idle bleed screw on the intake throttle body. It is a flat head screw about 3/8" in diameter sitting less than flush with the T/B. You can adjust that. Idle air control valves can clogg. That can cause a low idle.

Gas pedal sticking could be a kinked throttle cable. Could be resistance in the pedal linkages.

Gas guage should not flop around. Sounds like either an electrical problem or an issue with the float mechanism inside the fuel tank.

looks like everyone has got you covered here.

look in the FAQ board. almost every thing u need can be found there.

i would suggest cleaning the FITV & IACV ( there is a thread about it)

if u just bought it go ahead and take care of your regular maintenence. plugs, wires if neccessary,( inspect the belts, brakes, balljoints, tierods, brakes, tires)

have u had an state inspection done?

My 93 also has a squealing/squeak sound when I crank the wheel. It only does it when I turn to the right, and it's pretty loud. Not a power steering noise. Could be my tie rods? I turned the wheel pretty far so I could get a good peek behind it in the well and I see the rubber grommets look rotten and they are quite hard and cracked. Pieces can be picked out in chunks. Need new boots or something?

thanks for the help guys!

I did check the FAQ thread before making a new post.

Car is road worthy, I'm just anxious to get the basics knocked out so I can get my M3 up on blocks and tear into my winter project. :D :D :D

And as far as inspections go, there are no required inspections in NE and I'm not gonna pour a whole lot of extra money into this car. Its a beater/DD car.

Yeah, it ran to begin with, just a few minor things I need to tackle. I haven't done any of this yet, but I will in the coming week or two.

And yeah, its only a beater car. I'm a BMW geek. My M3 is my real passion and the honda will be replaced next year by an e30 chassis BMW.

1) Check the belts and the rack

2) Other than greasing up (I wouldn't use WD40) the pedal assembly I can't think of what else would make it stick.

3) Check out the IACV/FITV/TB cleaning thread, I'd say go and do that regardless (good maintenance) and do the EGR cleaning too.

To fine tune adjust there should be a small screw on top of the throttle body. Just unscrew it a bit and you should notice the idle move up.

4) The gas gauges are kinda known to be inaccurate but shouldn't be moving around, most likely it's the sensor or the cluster.

5) There should be a yellow dipstick to check.

Update on the gas gauge. It will go up, or go down relatively slowly depending on if I'm accelerating or decelerating. It might move up to 1/4 of an inch or more. It only moves if I'm speeding up or slowing down. I think it might be the float because it seems relative to the fuel sloshing around in the tank. Also note this started taking place with about 1/2 tank of fuel. Not sure what will happen with a full tank b/c I haven't used up the fuel that was in the tank when I purchased it yet.
