Interior Painting
I want to paint a few things inside my honda. The console, armrests, air vents, etc. Does anyone have any advice? Which brand of paint to use? I've done some research and some web sites use a primer and some don't. Dupli-Color Brand has a paint that they claim doesn't need a primer. I'm looking for a texture free, smooth, glossy finish. Any help would be great.

paint of choice is up to you.... if doing yourself, make sure the part you painting is sanded down a bit(to allow for the paint to stick, instead of peeling off in a year). you can use 800 grid sand paper for that if u like.....to get a smooth texture free result just apply 4-5 coats of clear....I prefer PPG clears for quality....house of kolors is awesome too but $$$$. But imo let someone who knows how to do it right, do it for you.....remove the parts to be painted yourself, and just bring them to your local paint/collision shop. Labor shouldn't be expensive at all.....$25-50 tops

Just remember, that before start painting the parts you want, you need to degrease the surfaces (use alcohol and water 50/50) and wipe it clean, otherwise you will see some "fish eyes" imperfections.... and would have to repaint the parts....

Re: Interior Painting (spongerx)
I have painted a number of my interior parts using "Krylon Fusion" paint. I have used it for all kinds of plastic including the plastics on my ZX600R and it's been awsome. It's easy to work with and dries relatively fast. I would definelty recommend it!!

I hope you are not making one more ugly interior... i've seen some orange and blue ones that looked so cheap and horrible and were a waste of $$ and money IMO.
I hope you are doing something great..

Re: Interior Painting (seelyd)
Well I'm thinking about either black or graphite. I just painted the hub caps with a "Dupli Color" wheel spray paint (Graphite) and it looks pretty good seeing that my car is black. I don't want there to be a mess of colors inside. The interior is gray and so are parts of the dash. There is also a dark gray and of course the console is black so I didn't want to add some kind of extreme color to that mixture. I want to keep it simple but I think coloring the air vent rims, door handle cups, and arm rests would add a nice touch. I'm not going for a flashy look. More simple and classy.

Re: (gianinline)
What about if I want to keep the texture that is already there? Do I still need to sand in order for the paint to stick and will the paint just fill in the stock texture? Thanks for your advice about taking the pieces to the shop but I really want to do this myself. I want to learn what works best. I get a lot out of these projects. I was wondering about after painting and clear coat spraying, if I will still be able to use a product like Armor-all to bring out the color, or will the process of painting eliminate the effort of such products? Thanks for your help.

it would look nice for a while then you have to do it again and again.

If you want to keep the texture, you need to "scuff" the parts, or sand it with 800 grit or 1000 grit sand paper, and then wipe them clean.
When spraying, you can't come up to close or too slow, otherwise you will cover up the texture with "extra paint" and possibly create a run or a saggy looking spot.
If you prep it right, should not have problems with chips, fading and such.
I have painted a few parts inside my interior with a "smoke gray effect" color about a year ago, actually.... 13 or 14 months ago...and still shines, never chipped or anything. I work in a body shop, and just preped the parts using the right products, but.... sprayed everything at home!

paint
I used Rustoleum's textured paint for plastics for the interior pieces of my Impreza. The textured black comes out great, kind of a flat black. Make sure you sand, clean, and clean again though, otherwise the paint will chip off. Also make sure you do several light coats, heavy coats don't bond to the plastic as well.

Re: paint (sheepdog)
Just wondering what type of paint you used? So far Krylon Fusion, House of Colors and Rustoleum have been recommended. I'm ready to start looking for paint and clear coat.

Re: paint (spongerx)
I paint cars and part of them is the same polyurethane that most of your interior is. Clean the part (Windex, alcohol, etc), shoot it with some brand of adhesive enhancer for plastic. Your local auto paint store will have it in aerosol and in the can. After that sets up well, clean again and shoot with your color coat; only enough to get the color right. After that sets up, clean and dust, and shoot the clear.
It's oversimplified but that's the order.

Well not to trow a brother down but if you paint interior correctly you dont have to again and again but it a log process a long process.....
Things needed----- Scotch brite pads perferably red 400s , a bottle of ajax or blend prep, (paint) mixed PPG paint but if not the automotive paint from advanced auto the small cans about $5 a can....tape....Bottle of clear coat for adv.auto...and primer...
Ok to start..
1. take all the panels you wont to paint off
2. go out side to a water hose
3.(piece by piece) wet product , put ajax on scotch brite pad and scrub like hell (dont destroy the product)
4. let them dry(they should be a faded color...lets the paint bond with the plastics)
5. wipe them off and tape any area not to be painted
6. Paint them with the primer
7. let dry sand with 400 grit sandpaper to smooth it out sand lightly
8.Paint black 2 coats
9.clear coat
10.And install
And bam done
But my man you are right most the time it is done in a rush and they have to do it over and over again..
