Hey guys. I have had a problem for about a month now with my Accord. I have an automatic 1992 Honda Accord DX, and lately it has been making a weird noise. Everytime I accelerate to about 35-45, once it is in gear I hear a humming sound.

At first I thought it was related to the the front end near my tire, but it may be coming from near the engine. Is it possibly a transmission problem? I am not sure what to do. It has done it ever since our long trip outta state.

Inside where the fans are, the casing around one of them is broken, so I thought maybe it was hitting the fan, but I am not sure. If anyone has any idea what the noise could be let me know. My transmission shifts harder than it should, but I hear that happens with high mileage and I have 156,000 miles.

Sounds like it could possibly be a wheel barring.

What everyone has told me is that if it was a wheel bearing then it wouldn't just do it now and then. The humming noise only happens when it wants to. It does it quite often, but sometimes it will skip days.

My dad is a mechanic and he can't figure it out. I think I may have Farm and Fleet give me a free inspection or something. I don't know too much about cars

Next time you hear it, turn the steering wheel. A wheel bearing will usually quiet when it is loaded side to side.

If you just recently change the transmission fluid then it could be the trans. Not sure about Honda but my 87 Corolla had a trans fluid change the dude did not pump the fluid in the back pipe and blew the gear and had to rebuild it. Otherwise that noise could be the bearing as mine seems to do that too. I have a 1990 Accord AT4 LX. I think it's the bearing but it could also be the brakes. Check the rotor to see if it's smooth. The pads might be catching.

Yes we did just change the transmission fluid before our 1000 mile trip. it was very low, and we had no idea. We put Ford transmission fluid in it, but they said it would work just like any transmission fluid. If it is the transmission gear, then how much would it cost to rebuild it?

I thought a wheel bearing wouldn't just do it at a set speed though?

i would never put ford tranny fluid in a honda tranny. always use honda z1 atf. they make there fluid specifically for their cars. the hum you could be hearing could definitely be coming from the transmission. if it was running on low fluid for a period of time or incorrect fluid the life of the tranny would be shortened greatly.

my accords tranny had no problem until i took it to a shop and they put the wrong fluid in there. i thought nothing of it at the time until im looking at a busted transmission. signs of your tranny going bad will could be slipping, shifting too soon or late, or rough shifting. usually once your car starts just reving and won't go into gear its time for a rebuild or new tranny. when my tranny blew it would sometimes go into 1st but rarely. reverse worked fine with blown tranny though

How much is it to rebuild the tranny? How much to buy one? I haven't had this car for too long now, about 2 months or so. The car has always shifted rough, but i heard that is common for high mileage and mine had 150,400 when i got it.

I have no idea how to work on cars, but my dad is a mechanic. He just doesn't know much about Hondas

i got quoted 800-1200 to rebuild at a shop. so i said **** that bought a used jdm tranny from ebay for 50k miles for 500(250 of it was shipping). basically if you have a haynes manual and a good assortment of tools changing the tranny isn't really hard at all. im 19 with little experience and i was able to complete the job so im sure your paps could do it. if you get a jdm tranny ask make sure you get the right one for your model and also ask them about what it comes with and if it needs a different flex plate or not.

the fluid you should use is honda premium formula that can either be ordered online or purchased at your local honda dealership. will probably be slightly cheaper online. and also remember to get atleast twice as much fluid as the haynes manual says to because you will also need to fill up the torque convertor. my haynes manual said 2.5 quarts and i had to use 5
