got the cover off... kinda man handled it.... no clue how i will get it back on, but i will worry about it then.
Where Does the oil come from under the rear balance shaft. the 10mm bolt has oil on it. mine does too. will changing the gasket fix that??

No, leave that there until the cover is off and you've verified the engine is at TDC.
If I was I would
Maybe try posting in the regional forum and see if anyone is interested in helping.

Yes, changing the seals should fix that.

The first time I did this was quite a while ago but I remember what a pain it was getting that thing back on. I just kept saying "It came out of there it's got to go back on somehow".
I read a post somewhere about changing all of those seals. I hope you can find it.

ordered one of these for the seals. lets see how it works.... Drained the coolant last night. Will take off the Engine mount on the block, and do the water pump tonight... little by little :-)
The Helms manual says to put oil on the water pump seal... just regular motor oil???

Everything I read about the water pump says nothing about oiling the seal just use a new gasket. The oil sounds like a good idea on the crank, cam and balance shaft seals though.
Here's a link to another how to I found in this thread.

Re: How-To: Replace Timing Belt, Timing Balancer Belt and Water Pump on a F22B1
wow that seal puller work like a charm.
Took off the TB, WP, changed the front balance shaft seal.
Is there a way to hold the cam while i take off the cam bolt??? I forgot to take it off while the belt was still on (want to change the cam seal).
also is there a trick on getting the timing belt sprocket on the crank off ( want to change front man seal)??? I removed the Key and tried turning it.. no luck. I also put the old timing belt on it and tried torquing it off, and it moved the crank.... need to put it back to TDC now...

nice, I may have to give something like that a shot next time.
You could place a piece of wood or shop towel on the head surface, and using a large screw driver or pry bar through the cam gear, hold the screw driver while loosening the cam gear bolt. Use something between the head surface and the screw driver to protect the head surface from being damaged. Be careful, this is why I recommend loosening that bolt with the timing belt still installed.
A lot of people have experienced this problem. Some suggest using a gear puller and getting the fingers behind the gear and some have suggested using heat. If you use heat, people have said they've only heated the gear and stayed away from the crank and it didn't take too much heat for it to loosen up. Luckily each timing belt I've done the timing gear has come off without issue :knocks on wood:

Re: How-To: Replace Timing Belt, Timing Balancer Belt and Water Pump on a F22B1
OKAY... DONE!!!
As for taking off the Cam bolt, I used my impact gun. Didn't move the cam really. The seal tool worked great on that too. It was leaking like no other so good thing I changed it.
For the crank sprocket that was stuck, I removed the Key and sprayed PB blaster in it. Let it sit... hit the face with a hammer, to shock it. then used the old timing belt, put it on and had my buddy old it on top, and put the crank bolt back on. And turned the crank, the sprocket moved, so i put it back to TDC and the sprocket came right Out. I think the shock for the hammer is what did it.
Thanks for the walk through. I did a few things different, as I did not want to put on a remove the cover twice at the send... broke a part off too.. OOPS!....
but it is all done! I have to say... that seal puller really came in hand for the front main too. I couldn't get the tool in, so I tried the Awl, and the screw trick, no good.
SO, I took the tip off the tool and used that, I got it in and pull with pliers.. POP all done!

Re: How-To: Replace Timing Belt, Timing Balancer Belt and Water Pump on a F22B1
don;t forget to buy all of the seals... might as well do them...
Front balance shaft has a seal, and rear has a gasket.
cheap place if you want to wait for honda parts is majestic honda or, http://www.hondapartscheap.com/
turned out the parts cheap place was a local dealer in northern California... tooo bad i found out after i placed my order with majestic and had to wait for delivery. you can get DW1 ATF for cheap too.
a trick I did to make sure the cam gear was aligned with the head, is that back side of the gear has lines too. i ran the rim with my nail and insured my nail fell into the groove and was touching the head too. if that makes sense ... Also i highly recomend the seal puller... was worth the 13.50 from amazon.... but i like owning special tools.... like the coolant bleeder

TA, Thanks for the PDA write up. While I have a B2 non vtec, it's all quite similar and at 180k, Mine will be due right pretty soon. Probably do it at 200k.

You're welcome! Good luck
Do you know when the timing belt was last done? If not, how long have you owned the car? Waiting 20k miles may be a bit long, might not, you never know.

@TouringAccord:
Wanted to thank you for your thorough detailed how-to guide. I recently purchased a 1999 Accord with the F23A1 engine and apparently the timing belt has never been replaced even though it has almost 180K miles. Obviously it's way overdue and I was debating whether to do it myself. I think I'm going to give it a shot now after I found your excellent guide. Thank you so much!

2.0Si, you're welcome
Good luck and just take your time. It's a big job but definitely doable for most people. If you run into any trouble or have any questions just post in here and I or someone will do our best to answer
I'm glad people are getting so much use out of this how-to guide.
