How long do you let your car warm up?

Re: (Heat)
i have a 95 accord lx body vtec engine
i give mine about 30sec to a min then drive in "nicely" untill its warmed up. altho i try not to beat on the car alot anyways. i dont believe in letting it idle until its warm just because you dont want to be cold while driving to your destination.

I think letting your car up every day is dumb, if it is going to sit for weeks, then yes you should prolly turn it on and bring it up to the right temp. For me though I just take it easy turn the car on once i get in, put in the cd that I want and I think if it needs any time to warm up thats enough. Exremely cold weather may be different, cause i live where it does not snow.

Re:
Like the other guys said the best way to warm up your car is just drive and not idle. Its good enough just to leave it idling for 20 to 30 secs and thats it. Nothing will happen to your engine if you drive it off right away.

I don't remember where I read this, and I might be horribly wrong, but from what I've heard, while warming up your car, you can put unneccesary strain on the engine.
To play it safe, I usually just go slow for the first two minutes or so.
If I find the site where I read that, I'll post the URL tomorrow.

Ever since i have owned a car. I have either waited till the rpms drop, or wait till the tempgauge starts moving past the cold line. Wether I am ever late or early i always take car of the car.

I let my car warm up until I can see out of the winshield safely. Usually start the car, scrape ice/snow of the windows/car, bang off the wipers and that. By that time the car is warm enough to turn on the defrost. But I don't leave until I can see.
If the windows are clear and easy to see out of, I'll usually wait a couple minutes and then leave, then drive lightly until the car is fully warmed up.

What about just warming up for about 20-30 seconds and idling down the road for about 2 minutes or so? (probably only works if you live in a sleepy resedendtial area though).

Usually 30~1min if it sits in the garage. But when its been sitting inside 1min~2min. Then drive it really carefully until its at operating temp

I give my car like 2 minutes to warm up.
Given I do it cause it is boosted and I like to let the oil cycle to make sure everything is well lubricated... also the oil pressure settles, gets out of cold start idle, etc. I also do it cause I dont like to heat cycle my engine and whatnot that quickly from dead cold to hot by driving it immediately... it may be nothing to some but it makes me feel better.

you wouldnt like to just get up after 8 hours of sleep and just go straight to work right? you need to wake up and warm up.. so give your car the same respect.
always let your car warm up after its been sitting for a few hours and its cold.
also i heard with the EX models with (V-TEC) the V-tec module kicks in after the car is fully warmed up too... yes? No?

Yes. Also, if it's an auto tranny, it doesn't go into lockup until the engine is fully warmed up.

See i think it would cool (or annoying)if the auto-Manufacturer, would come up with a gadget or sensor, that would allow you to start drinving when your car is operating under normal Temp. Anyway just a thought.

I'd like to see that URL you were referring to, cause i have never heard you can strain your engine by letting it warm up.

Don't think you can compare a car to a human, sorry, a car is definatly a machine, no living human traits.
Warm up is personal preference, there is never snow on the ground here where I live so I do not think i need to warm up my car, just take it easy till the temp gauge starts going up. You probable use more gas warming your car up, than just taking it easy until you get to the freeway or something. So long as its not a short drive and the car will get up to temperature for a lil while before you stop.
If you are taking it easy until the car is warmed who needs v-tech? v-tech only kicks in when you are pushing the car... as long as you do not do that until you get the car up to temp your fine.
