How do you put a tachometer on 2001 honda accord?
Hey there everyone.
I got an Autometer 5" Tachometer with Shift light from my friend and I want to put it on my 2001 Honda Accord 5-speed with F23A4 engine.
Please help me. I have looked around but I cannot find anything that I'm looking for.
I cannot find the blue tach wire that you have to put the signal wire (from the tachometer) to. Please help me.. pictures will help alot. thank you

I'm not sure about the 2001. I can't imagine it's all that different than my 1996 6 cyl ex. You have to take the cluster out and drop the new tach in. There are no wires. The circuitry are all in the cluster. There is a step by step on how to take out the cluster in FAQ.

I have already taken out the cluster before but I dont want to cut a wire and have the whole cluster harness fail on me.

The cluster gets that signal somehow
I'm most certain there's a wire for it right up there, in fact when I wired a VAFC in you wire it to get the RPMs at the ECU.
To OP, I would look at the ECU diagram for your model year and look at the wire color code, there should be a wire of a the same pattern leading to the tach in the cluster. If I recall you splice into it at 2 different places? At least with the VAFC I believe that's how it was done. (so the signal goes through the VAFC first then out the VAFC to the ecu)

Well I looked at the ECU Wiring diagram and it states that A19 is the Pin # for the RPM.
here's a link to the site i got it from:
http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/r...nda_Accord.php
so now would I trace the A19 wire back to the cluster and cut and hook my tach wire to it?

Is there a lone blue wire in your engine harness that's somewhere near the master cylinder area? If so, take your tach signal from that, if not, then you can take it from the ECU, the gauge cluster harness, or the distributor.

that almost exactly why..but its an EX..it does have the tach on the cluster but i want to put the Autometer one with shift light.
(and if you have something negative to say..then please keep it..nd please save the telling me that i dont need another one and that the one on the cluster is fine..)
also thanks to everyone
i looked at my dizzy and couldn't find the blue wire..i found it on my homies civic si but i dont have that..and thats why i'm asking on this forum

Re: How do you put a tachometer on 2001 honda accord?
I found the blue wire you were talking about but I found it thru the ECU/PCM.
Traced it back to the cluster and found the same wire. Then I cut blue wire just enough to put my Tach signal wire on there and see if it works. I started the car but I came to a problem. The wire I found is the CORRECT wire for the Engine Speed Pulse (RPM) but the rpm that my tach on the cluster shows doesn't reflect the rpm on the tach for the Autometer (slower then the cluster tach rpm).. does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Re: How do you put a tachometer on 2001 honda accord?
I searched around and found out that I need a Tach Adapter 9117 for it to work properly. So I'm going to look around and see if anyone is selling the adapter (for cheap cuz I don't want to spend $70 on just the adapter).. so if anyone's selling one then holla at me.. thanks

Look at the back of your tach, there's going to be looped wires, I think they are like brown, orange, and green or something like that. These are not long wires like the rest of them, these are little tiny wires that are looped. If you cut one wire. Most tachs have two wires, some have three or four. The ones with 3-4 wires are for V10s and V12s. Each wire you cut recalibrates the tachometer down 2 cylinders. Most the tachs have 2 wires and were made for V8s, so if you cut one wire, it'll be calibrated for a V6 and if you cut both of them, it will be calibrated for your 4 cylinder.
Some people don't know what the looped wires are, so they push them back into the tach housing. If you can't see the looped wires, then you'll have to take the back cover off of your tach to expose and cut them. If you don't know how to take it apart, then buy a tachomter signal adapter on e-bay.
If you're wondering..... yes, I was once a ricer. I had a monster tach in my 1.9L Turbo B18C1 civic hatchback 10 years ago and I had the full bodykit and white wheels to match.

Re: How do you put a tachometer on 2001 honda accord?
Well that's exactly what's how my tach is. Guess I'll have to mess with it tomorrow.
I'll tell you if it worked or not. Thank you.
oh and would you happen to know anything about the G23 Frankenstein engine? because i want to do this swap in my accord later on and was looking to get as much info as possible..I have already seen the buildup that went in the civic. F23 block, H22 head, K24 pistons, B16 tranny..but i wanted to get some info for my accord like tranny and things like that..thank you again

Thank you slomofo for all the info. My tach works perfectly now, and I also found the blue wire by the intake pipe (the one with the 2 pin connector)

i wonder if im supposed to do exactly that. i have a 99 accord and i just hooked that green wire to a yellow wire connected to my distributor and it works fine. so if this bad let me know. but its been working fine for a long time.
