How to check your mileage
1. Fill tank with gas (stop at first clickoff)
2. Set trip odometer to zero, or write down odometer miles (remember what pump you parked at and what position the car was in)
3. drive how and where you usually drive until the low gas warning light comes on
4. Park in the same spot where you did the first time
5. Fill tank and stop at first clickoff again
6. Write down the number of gallons from the gas pump
7. Write down the number of miles traveled before you leave the station (if no trip meter you will have to subtract previous from present miles)
8. Divide miles traveled by gallons used. (this is your mpg)
9. Do this a few times and average the results

I just saw a post like that.... ..is it normal to get 310 on a car with I/H/E.... it's a 5sp 97 accord EX.... ...sometimes i think it is "not so good" gas mileage... but... i think that the headers and exhaust burn more gas or something...

since i've been at HT i kept a notepad with ALL the things i need to know about accords. the post you made should be added into the sticky about accord basics. along with things to watch out for incase of decrease in MPG. that thread could use an update though

Re: (ThunderCat)
99 Accord 4cyl with many bolt-ons. My normal weekly drive consists of a fill-up, 160 highway miles, then the remainder is spirited on-base/in town driving. I usually fill up around 400 miles, where I calculate a 27.8mpg average every week. I get right at 425 miles if I run it dry . Though my Accord is supposedly equipped with a 17.1 gal tank, I rarely get 16 gallons in it when filling up. As for making this a sticky... BLKFLSH's formula is dead on, but it's universal to any vehicle, and normally goes hand in hand with common sense.

dont get it twisted,i dont see how it will hurt to post it up in there along with things to look for. i mean if you guys prefer to keep on telling cats: search man search. then thats fine. its just a suggestion to add this along with what might make MPG decrease.

yeah,
keep driving around until you e light comes on and sooner than later you will be replacing a fuel pump and on anything older than a 6th gen you gotta pull the tank down to get to it.
i fill up when it gets to 1/4 tank and it is really simple math miles driven / gallons used.

if anyone who has a license and finished grade school could figure this out the US would be in a lot better condition.
anyway good info to post for many stupid asses who ask things like "i got 290 miles to a tank, is that good? i mean i have a 17 gallon tank and 290 miles doesnt seem like much."

Re: How to check your mileage (deserthonda)
Well DH, with the mpg estimates I've seen in this forum, some people obviously do'nt know how to do it right. Some of them think they can go by the tank's capacity. I don't think the tank holds exactly 17 gallons, and even if it does you would have to run it completely dry.

Re: How to check your mileage (BLKFLSH)
If they were assuming 17 gallons, that would give them less gas mileage. You are always accusing people of lying about how high their mileage is. I'm not following your logic.

That's because you are one of them. They go by the gas guage or the light I guess. I doubt they actually run the car out of gas. I would'nt think going by either of those would be very accurate.

Re: How to check your mileage (BLKFLSH)
BACKFLUSH,
I put between 14 and 15.5 gallons in every time I fill up and I have checked my mileage religiously on every single tank for 20 years. I keep a calculator in the door of my car. I have no reason to lie about the 28 MPG I get from my 92EX with 233,000 miles. Like I told you in another post, learn how to find your vacuum leaks and properly maintain your car and you might be able to get a little better mileage. I've been reading your posts for several weeks now and haven't seen you contribute ANY worthwhile knowledge to anyones problem. In fact, you mostly stick to gas mileage discussions.

It's a F22A6. I don't ever redline it, but no one gets the jump on me in traffic unless they do. I'm always looking for the pole position. I could probably change my habits and do a little better.

that still doesnt negate the fact that unless they are using the gallons listed that they put into the car, they are actually shorting themsleves.
you might be the most pompus, ignorant 43 year old person ive ever come across in my life

Oh, so I'm supposed to believe some fool on a forum, and not believe companies that have tested thousands of cars. That sounds brilliant.
By the way, you are on the internet, I don't believe you.
