Honda Oil Vs. Other premium Oils?
I Have a 2001 Accord 3.0. I was wondering what oil is better for everyday driving? I would think that the honda oil is good because it is made by honda for honda motors. However, oils like Mobil1 are know to be top of the line oils. What is better? The same goes for the filters? I would like to hear you opinions, Thanks.

honda oil is not made by honda. honda oil is made by other manufacturers and then relabeled with a honda label.
as far as oils go everyone has their own preferences, so i would jsut get any brand you like in the proper viscosity for your motor.
as far as filters, oem honda filters are not bad and purolator pure ones, fram x10s, and mobil 1 filters are all good quality filters.
the more importnat thing is to change your oil and filter on time, than to worry about if your using the best filter and the best oils.

the higher line of fram filters are pretty good, i think its called the x10 or ultraguard or soemthing. that oil forum did a review on it and it came out good.

For my '99 LX I4 I use Castrol GTX with a Honda OEM filter (~ $5.50 or so from the dealer).
For a V6 I would probably use Mobil 1 and the Honda OEM filter. Buy it in 5 quart jugs from Wal-Mart, will be ~ $20 or so (much cheaper than buying it by the quart).

I use Castrol Syntec. They actually have the Honda name on the label. I thought about Mobile 1, but it was very expensive, and I could not find 5-20w in the five quart bottle. I usually go by the dealer and get 5 oil filters at a time, so I don't have to keep going back. Make sure to get the crush washers (for the drain plug) with the filters.

someone on s2ki ran a oil test and found out what they are

yes, the high end fram filter is very very good actually, but the thing is if you only swaping juice every 3 k and your motor is in good shape, there's more than enough filter to handle the "dirt"
Valvoline=
brake juice, syn. grease, motor oil
MaxLife is one of the best oil for older vehicle, it's a synblend formula that is not a fortified "add-on" like most of the oil out there.

Re: (iam7head)
u will do fine with honda motor oil if you drive you dont drive your car hard. but if you like most of us, who are 'spirited drivers' and/or track our cars once ina while you will benefit from forking up a lil more $$ for full synthetics such as mobil 1.
as far as filters go, just stick with OEM honda.

Yes, Honda oil is made by Mobil and for those of you who are interested, Fram makes Honda's oil filters The only complaint I have ever had with Fram filters is they are the only ones that leave the oil filter o-ring on the block when you take the filter off. That was the problem that Honda had with the 04 CR-V catching fire. The first oil change, people didn't check to make sure that the oil o-ring had been removed with the filter and it was leaking. They said a manufacturing problem with the new filters. Sounds like the Fram filters to me.

i'd just take my car to get an oil change at places like Jiffy Lube and ask them to use the oil filter i supply which is the BLUE honda oil filter. and then use High end Oil cause i tend to drive my car a bit hard...but he can take it heh...

I use royal purple, with the lucas full synthetic stablizer, and also a K&N fillter. I know next time that I am going to go with castrol full synthetic, and haven't decied on the fillter. The lucas realy helps, but royal purple is to expensive.

i've scored Purolator's premium plus oil filters for 1 cent after coupon & mail-in rebate for july 2-29...
(w/ stamp & taxes, it actually came out to ~25 cents per filter)
stocked up on this for my family's cars (i got 16 w/ 4 different mailing addys)
----------------------------
Y, changing oil's not that hard; if you're local, I'll do it for $10 (you supply parts)
-----------------------------
hondaaccord, did you read bobistheoilguy.com about the lucas oil stabilizer? just a good quality oil is sufficient

For the most part as long as you don't get no name parts or store brand oil you will be fine. Just be sure to do it on itme

ok after reading that I think I will stick away from it all together. So yeah just a good oil like castroil. a side question though. Does any one think those 15k 30k or 60k motor oils actualy last? I just couldn't do that to my car.

i've seen them on other boards... but my or wifey's car arent that new...
piston blowby a big factor in keeping these long-life oils from being contaminated prematurely... w/ my car reaching 210K and wifey's only @ 106K, i'm ok w/ regular dino oil and regular filter changes @ least every 4-5 months
