That's why I prefaced my remark. Gm disables the Starter, Honda disables the ignition (I guess)

They disable the fuel injectors actually. To keep from flooding by spinning the motor for hours on end with a hardware store key.

Why don't you go rip on hondabumb for calling you an *** as well! Have a nice day!!!

If you want a better understanding of what is going on, and what the various people
are saying, try reading my article:

http://www.team.net/www/morgan/tech/art026.html

While it's on my Morgan web page, it is universal in nature. Almost every car has
the same or similar system. The only exception is that new cars and an additional
relay to supply power to the starter solenoid.

You might want to check out some of the other non-Morgan specific articles there
also.

Totally cool man, I knew you just took it the wrong way. If you knew me you'd know that's just my sarcasm. Now can we graduate from highschool and talk cars again?

I'm back.

I did like you all and got a new battery. I know this is a "Honda-Tech" site so dont get mad when I say I got a $40 battery from Walmart.

I connected it and it started up like a charm. In hindsight, I did notice a few things prior to my car not being able to start:

1) My lights seemed dimmer, but I thought maybe "it was just me"
2) I have been using my car lighter to charge my PSP and cellphone a bit lately. Albeit, while the car is running but I imagine this still puts drain on the battery.
3) The car seemed to take a couple more "clicks" to get started ever since the weather got colder.

Now, that being said, I have a couple more questions:

1) How long do you think my Walmart battery should last? Doesnt the alternator kick in once the engine turns over?
2) Since replacing the battery fixed the problem, does this rule out the chance I have a bad starter or alternator?
3) I like to drive with my headlights on for safety. Is this killing my battery?

Okay thanks guys. Also, I kind of ignored the mini-flame war.

honda210,

No it wasn't you. One quick test for a dying battery is to turn your headlights on and
honk your horn. If the lights go out and the horn doesn't honk, the you battery is
either not charged or dying.

This is due to the fact that the headlights are high current devices. If the battery
can't produce enough current then the headlights won't be as bright as normal.
Trying to honk the horn put another pretty heavy load on the battery. Then the
dim headlights will go out, and the finite amount of current is divided between the
headlights and the horn.

>2) I have been using my car lighter to charge my PSP and cellphone a bit lately.
>Albeit, while the car is running but I imagine this still puts drain on the battery.

While this does draw power from your car battery, it is negligable. Not to worry,
especially if you have the engine running.

>3) The car seemed to take a couple more "clicks" to get started ever since the
>weather got colder.

The cold weather usually show the weak batteries due to the fact, that the oil
thickens and the metal contract just a bit. This requiring a little more effort to
turn the engine over. Not to mention the fuel doesn't want to burn as easily.
This increased effort corresponds to a greater electrical draw on the battery
by the starter.

>1) How long do you think my Walmart battery should last?

Your Walmart battery should be a 4 year battery and last about 4 years. This
assumes that you aren't running a rediculious radio, with the zillion watt amp.

> Doesnt the alternator kick in once the engine turns over?

Not really. Usually the engine has to be doing 1500 to 2000 rpm for the alternator
to output.

>2) Since replacing the battery fixed the problem, does this rule out the chance I
>have a bad starter or alternator?

Basically yes. at least for the starter. If your alternator isn't outputting, the you will
drain the battery, but not right away. So it may take from several hours to a couple
of days to drain a fully charged battery, depeneding on what you have running -
headlights, windshield wipers, radio & amp.

The way to check, is to up a multimeter set to the 1st range above 12V DC across
the battery. With everything off, the battery should read 12 to 12 1/2 V. Then
start the car and rev the engine up slowly to about 1500 rpm. You should see the
voltage across the battery raise to about 14.7 volts.

>3) I like to drive with my headlights on for safety. Is this killing my battery?

No, unless your alternator is not working, or you have a large draw like a radio
amp, and the alternator can't output enough to meet the demand of both the
headlights and the radio (or the combined load of all the accessories you have
on).

Again, you might want to check out some of the articles on my Morgan
web page, under the non-specific articles, Electrical:
