Default High oil consumption normal for F23? Honda says it's okay

My 2000 Accord has just under 40k miles and I'm consuming somewhere around 1qt of oil every 1000-2000 miles. Engine compression is good according to my test and the dealer's test. The dealer says that there is a tech bulletin that states that consumption of less than 1qt/1000 miles is "normal" and acceptable. I'm not smoking, performance is normal, fuel economy has stayed above 35 mpg, so it doesn't seem to hurt total performance. I adjusted the valves for the first time last week to see if it made a difference (and to look under the valve cover), but it doesn't seem to have mattered as of yet. I heard from another individual that Honda (as well as Chevy and maybe others) have losened the specs on the wiper piston ring for better fuel economy and a little bit of power, at the cost of increased consumption. I'm trying to figure out where the oil is going, since it's not leaking. Is it just vaporizing and getting sucked through the PCV into the intake manifold? Would a crankcase breather filter or some sort of oil catch help? How much consumption do others 6th gen owners have? I'm used to my D16Y8 Civic which consumes less than 1/4 quart between oil changes. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'd be happy to know for sure where the heck all of that oil is going.

Seems like alot for a honda engine, especially a non-high out put one. I have experienced TypeR engines using about a quart every 1000 miles but that is normal for those engines. I dont know man, but it just doesn't seem right.

That seems a little high. I have a 2000 4cyl. with 26K on it, my fuel economy isn't as good, though that's my own fault .

I have a 1994 accord with 104K on the clock and it only uses 0 quarts/1000 miles. I have owned many cars and I have never had a car jap or american that ate oil like that.

My car has 94,000 kms on it (put 30,000kms on it in 3.5 months), I do mainly highway driving, and I use no oil. Even when i treat it like I stole it my oil consumption is nill.

Their may be something wrong with urs, maybe it wasnt run in properly or something. Then again 1 quart every thousand miles is said to be acceptable. i wouldnt worry bout it too much.

Check your oil and top it off at every fuel fill-up.

99 F23A1 with 110k on it. MPG still in the mid to low 30s, 90% highway driving. I use about 1/2 qt for every 2 tanks of gas or about 900 miles. I do use more if I really get on it a lot.

1 qt/1000 miles seems excessive.

you could replace the PCV valve and see if that helps. it's a cheap part and would take 10 mins to swap out.

there does seem to be a good bit of oil vapor residue in the TB and IM. I've seen people smarter than I claim the little valve cover breather thingy can actually be bad for your motor, so I wouldn't put one on. I've been tossing around the idea of running a catch can set up like a lot of the B series people do, but just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. I'd tell you to do a search on it in the tech section, but since search is down...

Wow...that seems like alot of oil consumption for a 40k mile motor. I'm not sure what was causing it, but my moms 94 Accord EX (currently at 173k mi) was going through quite a bit of oil for awile. It wasn't burning or leaking, just disappearing. Then all of a sudden it quit doing that for some reason, and now it isn't going through hardly any at all. Weird... PCV is the only thing I could think of, not sure though. My A20A3 with 314.3k only uses about 1-1.5 quarts between 5000 mile oil change intervals, that's with synthetic and a very small leak in the rear main crank seal.

That's too much oil you are consuming. What is your driving style? Do you keep the car in high rpm often? If not, it shouldn't burn off that much oil no matter what kind of motor oil you use.

I suggest to take it to another dealer and ask them about it. But then seeing that you have 40k miles in your car, hope you have extended warranty. Also calling Honda Care would help... Honda care would make the dealers fix things right.

I can assure you that my driving style would have little to do with it. I started an oil consumption analysis with the local Honda dealer earlier in March and after about 750 miles, 21 ounces was added. Obviously blow-by or compression isn't an issue or I wouldn't be keeping 35+ mpg. My PCV valve seems to be working correctly as there is the typical pressure blowing out of the oil fill hole with the cap off, but slight suction on the hole if I cover it with my hand. Does anyone have access to tech bulletins for the 2000 F23A4? I'd like to see what it has to say about oil consumption and why anything less than 1qt/1000 miles is acceptable.

Bottom line is that I'm trying to see if this is normal for this specific engine. I don't want to press for a complete disassembly of my engine by a dealership unless there really is something wrong. I'm going to look in to a catch can. I'd really like to see if it's just oil mist or vapor getting sucked into the manifold and burnt.

Who else has an F23A1 or A4 and how much gas "puffs" out of your fill hole at idle with a warm engine?

There are no service bulletins for your car pertaining to oil use other than the oil consumption test you are familiar with.
