Default H22 CB9 Failing Smog

Hello, recently took a H22 swapped CB9 to the smog station today. Passed inspection and failed pretty badly on the emissions.

Here's what I got.
15 MPH - Fail (Gross Polluter)
- CO2(%) l Meas= 10.15 l
- 02 l Meas= 0.00 l
- HC(PPM) l Max= 78 l GP= 286 l Meas= 323 l
- CO(%) l Max= 0.72% l GP= 2.22 l Meas= 7.04% l
- NO(PPM) l Max= 778 l GP= 1973 l Meas= 387 l

25 MPH - Pass
- CO2(%) l Meas= 14.60 l
- 02 l Max= Meas= 0.00 l
- HC(PPM) l Max= 61 l GP= 236 l Meas= 59 l
- CO(%) l Max = 0.60% l GP= 2.10 l Meas= 0.12% l
- NO(PPM) l Max= 717 l GP= 1773 l Meas= 163 l

The motor is a JDM H22A stock besides AEM SRI and DC headers.

Right now i'm experiencing terrible gas mileage.
Did a 120mi trip up to Sac and got 23 mpg with A/C.
Besides that, no check engine light or anything out of the norm.

Ok. I kinda shot myself in the foot prepping.
I didn't warm up the cats. Probably hit 30mph tops coming to the station haha.
So I'll come in hot next time.
Besides that I have a feeling the O2 sensor might be buggered up.
I'd like you guy's input.

I'll check the plugs tomorrow and do an oil change. What else do you think I might be able to do to pass?

Halp!

CA is five gas. You only posted HC & CO
O2, NOx and CO2 will help us help you better diagnose the problem.

Alrighty, updated everything else. What does GP stand for in smog terms? This is my first non pre 75 car, so I'm pretty new to smog haha.

Gross polluter, I would imagine.

Start with the basic stuff. I'd start by first checking the spark plugs as they'll usually tell the story for you.

How many miles are on the swap?

The motor has 84k. I'll check the plugs and update.

Some engine importers (hmotorsonline.com for instance) require the customer purchasing a motor to replace several maintenance items on the engine in order to maintain the warranty since often times the engines will have sat for quite a while in some warehouse. It'll usually include stuff like distributor rotor, spark plugs, water pump etc. Not sure if you have any record of that stuff being done ever.

If not, the motor is about due for its 90k mile service anyway, which is a pretty significant one primarily because it's when the timing belt gets replaced along with many other wear items which will all significantly influence how the engine runs and performs (and smogs). This is assuming that JDM motors follow the same maintenance protocols as USDM motors.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

You are running rich.
CO2 should be ~15%
O2 should be ~.5%
CO should be closer to .5%
NOx will increase when you fix the rich condition, but with a working catalyst this will not be a problem.

However, running rich can be damaging to the catalyst as the excess fuel is now being burned in the secondary combustion process(inside the catalyst) and may overheat/melt the internals if you allow this to go on for too long.

Verify that you have a strong spark at the plugs, look for a blue/white spark.
Verify Fuel Pressure is correct, too high of pressure will cause a rich condition.
Verify the PCV system is working correctly.
Verify the O2 sensor is working correctly, these sensors may not set a code but can become lazy over the years.
Verify your cooling system is working correctly. If your thermostat is stuck open or missing the engine will never warm up enough to properly pass emissions testing.
