Gas mileage V6 tips advice?
A 1996 Accord EX V6 is my daily driver. The car has 140,000 miles and is in great condition. I've been getting an average of about 21 mpg. The car is all stock. I was wondering if you all had any tips or advice on how to improve gas mileage.

I would do all the maintenance items, air filter, oil change, tranny fluid change, spark plugs, wires, distributor, etc. Also clean out the EGR valves.
There's a "emissions" warranty work out for the 4 cyl's that listed quite a few things to have swapped out.

Well, you can adjust the tire pressure as suggested by our new President Elect. or you can try this:
Replace fuel filter
Inspect Air Filter (change if ness)
Have the PCV system cleaned
Have the Throttle Body and IAC-V (Idle Air Control valve) cleaned
and
If your favorite shop has a scanner, have them check the "counts" on the Primary Oxygen Sensor(s). As they age, they become lazy (switch slowly) and detrimentally effect milage. I've seen losses to 27%

I already did an oil change and replaced the spark plugs. The air filters are more than 20 bucks, unfortunately, so I am thinking I might buy a 20 dollar washable cone air filter to put on the end of the intake hose. I don't want to put any money into the car if it wont pay for itself through improved gas mileage, or increase the longevity of the drivetrain. I suppose if I replaced the distributor cap and wires it would eventually pay for itself. As for the transmission, I bet a fluid exchange and a fresh filter will make it last longer. What about cleaning the EGR valves? How would I do that? Also, my car has a 2.7L V6 not a 4 cylinder.

Oh yes I definitely should replace the fuel filter. I actually recently installed new tires and the pressures are a few pounds high for improved mileage. How would I clean the PCV system?

While you do have kinda the odd motor for the year, it *should* be similar to http://www.driveaccord.net/for...t=739
I'm still trying to find the TSB where it lists all the parts Honda lists.

I'm averaging about 26-27mpg mostly highway in my 97 V6,118K miles now but I bought it about a month ago, and was averaging 19-20mpg. I gave it a good tune up, cap/rotor, oil change/tranny fluid change, plugs/wires, pcv valve, Air Filter(You can find the K&N drop in for about $35-$40, better than the $28 for the factory one.) alignment(if you haven't had one in a few years.) next step for me is going to be open the exhaust, just have to find a good highflow muffler that doesn't sound like pissed off bees stuck in a coffee can and a CAI(real cold air, not in the engine bay.)

Make sure tires are at least 32psi, don't hammer the throttle. Try to keep it under 50% throttle, you should have enough torque that this won't be a problem getting up to speed. The way you drive is the biggest factor in what gas mileage you get.
I have a SOHC VTEC and can get 38mpg. I can also get 28mpg. It depends on far I press on the gas.

I have the exact same car now at 230,000 miles on it. I get about 24-26 mpg. My wife did mostly highway driving though. Try cleaning the IACV also, that should give you better idle and better start and go.
