Fans wont come on??
1989 Honda Accord Lxi 4cyl. manual.
This thing has overheated on my twice. It started getting hot again today and I opened the hood to find that the fans were not on.
Is there a sensor or something that could be bad that would cause them not to come on? Any ideas on why they wouldnt be kicking on?
Also, the temp guage in the dash sometimes works and sometimes doesnt, lately. Where exactly is the sending unit so i can make sure a wire isnt loose or something. Do these temp. sending units go bad?
Thanks!!

Re: Fans wont come on??
There is this forum 1990-2002 and one for pre-88. This is an 89. I have always posted for this car in this forum. If it would be better suited in the pre-88, I will post it there. let me know.

There isn't a "correct forum" on this site, unless you assume that ALL 3rd gen's go into "pre-88". So 1/2 of the gen is classic and the other is just left out?
Either way, honda's haven' really changed that much between models.
Niether fan coming on would make me check/test the sensor/switchfor the fans (T-stat, lower part of rad). There is a differnt sensor/switch for the gauge so these could be realted but I'd bet they are different.
Do the fans come on when the ac is on? Of course I'm assuming the coolant is full and there isn't any air in the system.

Re: Fans wont come on??
so check the thermostat switch? where exactly is that located? you say lower part of the radiator, is it actually screwed into the radiator? not sure if that fans come on when the ac is on or not. The ac was on when it overheated, but I cant verify if the fans were on or not.
thanks for the help.
EDIT: okay, I think I found the sensor, its the one screwed into the center of the bottom of the radiator with a plug on it. So... how do I check it to see if its good?

Re: Fans wont come on??
The fan switch is in the lower part of the rad, lower right/pass side (if memory is correct, raining outside now so I can't go check). If you pull the connector and jump the wires in the connector and turn the ign switch on the fans should turn on. If not check the blue wire to the motor, should have volts Black wire is ground. If no volts on the blue wire then check fuses.
But to back up a bit, with the ac on BOTH fans should run. Check that first and post the answer. I'm on the "other" coast so I will not be on much longer.

Re: Fans wont come on??
okay, car isnt warmed up, but I turned the ac on and neither fan came on. I unplugged the sensor on the bottom right of the radiator and jumpered both pins of that plug together and the fans did NOT come on. havent checked voltage on the blue wire yet or fuses. I'll go do that now. Fuses for the ac are where?
EDIT: okay checked fuses in the engine compartment. 15A COOLING FAN fuse was blown. Replaced it and started the car, turned the AC on and the fan on the right side came on. I turned the ac off and am gonna let the car come up to temp and see if either fan comes on. I'll report back asap.
thanks for all of the help.
EDIT: okay car came up to temp and again, only the right side fan came on. I was looking at the left/drivers side fan. The two fans dont look like they are wired together. As I was looking I noticed that the left fan has wires that come out of the fan motor and come to a plug that mounts to the left side of the fan shroud. There is nothing plugged into that plug as if the fan isnt even hooked up. I looked and looked and cant find where it would plug into. Can you maybe look on yours and see where that fan plug goes into?
thanks again!
