Default engine swap or head swap?

I have a 96 honda accord f22b1 and im thinking of swaping in a h22a1. But i was talking to a guy and he said swap the head from a SOHC to a DOHC. Is it possible? Help!

Sure it's possible, what DOHC head are you looking at, F22B, F20B, H22, H23A1 or H23 VTEC?

What are your plans, goals and budget?

IMO you would be better off to get the entire H22 and swap it in. Dropping a DOHC head on a B1 block would drop the compression below 8.5:1. That would pretty much make the power gains of having 2 cams a moot point! Unless you are looking to go boost.

it is possible but i don't recommend it for a beginner. the gains on the f22b1 bottom end would be minimal. maybe 10-15whp if you're lucky. if it were me I'd swap the whole h22. a healthy h22 with decent mods even a USDM h22 can make a solid 150-160whp and a healthy JDM h22 with decent mods can make 170-180whp. a healthy jdm h22 with a bored and tapered s2000 throttle body, Hytech replica header, new skunk2 intake manifold, 3" exhaust, AEM v2 and RDX injectors with a good tune can even make a solid 200-205whp. with stage 2 skunk2 cams I've seen as much as 230whp. or lol, you can go my route.
$40-f22a head
$120- bisimoto 1 layer head gasket
$180-valvesprings
$270-bisimoto level 2
$300-h23 megan racing header with 2.5" collector
$280-aem v2
$40-h23 intake manifold
$100-port and taper throttle body
$300-h22 trans
total: $1630

this will produce 170whp+,150wtq+

but you'd do the same mods on a h22 like the intake, header, exhaust and throttle body so really you're looking at $610 into the f-series vs $1000 for the h-series. here's a link
to my f22 in my 92 accord coupe. full interior, a/c, cruise and all. mods are here https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-accord-1990-2002-2/f22a-f23a-hybrid-cb7-3160074/

yes as long as you use the water crossover pipe and the intake manifold aswell from the f23a. it can work without these but its more involved.

The F22B1 is VTEC! It's the F22B2 that is the SOHC Non VTEC

If you have the Non VTEC Accord chassis you will need a VTEC ECU and wire it accordingly to have an F23A1 VTEC head work properly.

Note; there are no real gains to adding the F23A1 head onto an F22B1 block. Installing the F23 intake manifold on an F22B1/2 is a gain though.

Make sure if you do this that you remember to remove the oil control orifice from the surface of the F22B2 block. If you don't you won't have the oil pressure in the head to engage VTEC.

Its easy to remove. I took one of my timing cover bolt (10mm), screwed it in a couple threads by hand and it pulled right out. The head is what holds it in place. Its just sitting in the block.

Yeah it is only held in there by the head and a rubber O-ring. It shouldn't just fall out if you turn the block over, you will require a bolt to thread into it and pull it out as mentioned.

I wouldn't say there's not gains to be had going from F22B1 head to an F23A1 head. If I'm correct, isn't the cam a hotter profile, the ports are larger on the intake(and valves), the intake manifold is a better design, and the rockers are a roller type? I'd say there's a decent gain to be had, but is it worth the money? That's completely up to the end user.

The F22B1 and F23A1 are pretty much identical head designs.

What do you mean by hotter cam design? If I'm not mistaken they are pretty much the same cam profile.

Intake port geometry from the head into the valves is the same. The port opening is just slightly elongated, doesn't take anything to port match the F22B1 to F23. The intake gaskets and manifolds are pretty much interchangeable.

The valves are the same size intake and exhaust. They use the same part numbers.

I agree that the F23A1 has a larger volume plenum and runners. That is an upgrade vs the F22B1 intake manifold. I agree!

The F22B1 also uses roller type rocker arms on the intake (VTEC) side. They both use he same part number 14620-P0A-000.

Only difference is really the 86mm combustion chamber.

I'm really thinking that the F23A1 cam is a hotter profile. F23A1's tend to put down much better whp figures than the F22B1's, I'm betting it's not just because of the intake manifold/mild displacement and compression increase. Both the head and camshaft have different part numbers, so there's bound to be a bit more difference. We won't really know until someone gets both and tests both of them.
