Distributor/ignition coil location question, 96 accord
Where is the ignition coil located on a 96 Honda Accord (197k) DX 4dr (f22b2 engine i think)?
I'm thinking it's inside the distributor. The diagrams I've seen are kind of fuzzy.
The reason I ask is because I'm looking to buy a new distributor and I'm wondering if I need to buy an ignition coil separately.
Any idea if new distributors come with the ignition coil? Is the coil inside the distributor?

What is the part # on the distributor? The TD76U is external. I want to say there is a Hitachi model on that year too. You should check out Distributor King on Ebay. They use new castings, not rebuilt cores. They also use higher quality internals than many companies. Best for last, most of the time, they are one of the cheapest. Are you sure the dizzy is bad?

I'm not sure about the part number, I'll look for it.
I'm pretty sure the distributor is bad, whether it be rotor, coil, or igniter, I'm replacing it all to be safe.
What I don't know is if I need to buy the coil separately, or if it just depends on the distributor. I was thinking only type of distributor fits my car though.

Try cap and rotor first. $30-40 or so and are parts that wear out. Will take less than 30 mins and can save you over $100 if you don't need the dizzy.

If it's the TEC distributor it is an external coil. If it's the Hitachi distributor it is internal. As far as I know the DX Accords with the F22B2 all have the external coil TEC distributor.
Easiest way to tell is if your distributor cap has 5 wires coming from it. If it has 5 wires. Follow that 5th (center) wire to the coil.
Really if you want to save money you could test all of these components first. But if you just want to replace them all, you don't need a new distributor. All you need is a new cap, rotor and ignitor. Clean out the old distributor with some electronics parts cleaner and your good to go. You could also buy a new external coil to complete the referb. Oh and don't forget plugs and wires.

I'm thinking mine is a TEC distributor because one of the wire inserts is covered with a plug. There are 5 wires (4 wires going to the cylinders) coming from it, and I'm thinking the 5th is going to the external coil. Could someone take a look at my picture and confirm if it's an external coil by chance? Thanks.
