I have a 98 accord 4-cyl. with 140k miles and original cv joints. I noticed a small tear in the passanger side boot and some grease has come out. Should I repair the boot or just replace the whole cv joint since it already has 140k miles?

If you have no noises associated with the CV Joint, it can be successfully resealed.
Just don't leave the building until you get it fixed.

Yeah, as someone who this past weekend replaced his axels, I would say that listen of a clicking noise when you turn while driving. If you don't hear anything, get a CV boot kit and get it sorted...

Yeah I understand what you guys are saying, BUT I have 140k miles. Should I just go ahead and replace the whole axle since something else might fail? The axle can't go forever! All comments appreciated.

Why? I've OE Joints that have never seen the light of day at 198,000m, 172,000m, and 147,000m; and an '88 that had its' 1st replaced at 214,000m.
With the logic being bantered about here, why not replace BOTH axles and the Ball Joints as well? And while you're at it, why not the inner control arm bushings and the springs?

Might as well do an engine swap too. Heck that engine has 140k miles on it, so it must be about to give out.

with the boot being cracked it would just just as much to repair it as it would to replace the joint. I paid $95 to have my outer joint replaced it would have cost $90 for a boot replacement.


I dunno what the big deal is....but you are way out of line in your remarks.........

Do you have to take it all apart just to change the boot. I've never changed one myself. Seems like a boot would be cheaper than a cv joint. But I guess if your paying someone else to do it, and the labor is the same, what the heck.

might as well get the whole thing, it's no so much of the part but if you doing the same amount of work, just replace the whole thing.

you will hate yourself later on if you starting to hear clicks after you put in your new boot

When I had it done they actually took the outer CV joint right off of the halfshaft and slid the new one on and reassembled the front suspension parts they loosened unbolted in the process.

Well, I replaced only the boot since the honda repair man said not much grease leaked out. Man I hope the cv joint will last 200k+ The part and labor cost $160.

I replace entire axles for $60

I can tell that I still have original halfshafts on my 91 Honda. I already put 216k miles on it and had no problems. I purchased the car with 147k and Honda technician replaced the boots.

If no dirt or water gets into the CV joint - it is actually runs forever.

Whole halfshaft is around $66 - check http://www.thepartsbin.com.

the OEM one last alot long but most of the people would just buy the autozone one, which is around 30 bucks, free replacement of some sort of warranty.

the autozone axle are reconditioned.
