Default camshaft question

while i was changing out my camshaft seal, i observed that when i spin my cam pulley counterclockwise, there seems to be an opposing motion that wants the pulley to spring clockwise.

did i tighten my camshaft bolt too tight?

prior to the seal replacement, when i manually turn the crank, there wasnt an opposing spring-like motion whenever i turn the crank counterclockwise but now it seems apparent.

what could be the problem?

thanks.

I can't see over-tightening the camshaft/gear bolt doing anything to your valve train rotation. Are you talking about the rocker arm assembly/cam cap bolts being to tight? How much tq did you apply to them?

There should be an opposing force ether way you turn the camshaft. That is the rockers rolling up ether the opening or closing ramp on the camshaft lobes.

Other than that I'm not sure what you are feeling. Do you have the spark plugs in?

the bolt im referring to is the camshaft pulley bolt, but thats out of the question now since it only requires about 20ft lbs and ive tightened it down to specs.

yes the spark plugs are in and when i rotate the power steering pulley to rotate the engine with my 19mm wrench, there seems to be a slight clockwise motion that springs back when i try to turn the crank counterclockwise.

What happens when you turn the crank clockwise?

I didn't know that it was a bad thing to do????...... IAT that once everything is buttoned up there wasn't anything wrong with turning the engine clockwise once or twice. Don't use the crank bolt to turn it though. Use the crank pulley tool if you have it.

i remember when my timing belt was off the camshaft pulley, turning the camshaft pulley had an opposing spring motion. i hope my head is not messed up.

I doubt that your head is messed up. That is what I was talking about. Your head should have an apposing spring to it. That is the rocker arms pushing against the cam lobes. It's normal........,

Could it be that the timing belt tensioner is pulling the belt back?

i didnt tighten the tensioner down yet. so far its the little springs on the timing belt tensioner thats pulling it up. but i havent pulled the timing belt tensioner up, i just tightened the adjusting nut.

GOT IT.

it was the spark plugs!

ive been rotating the engine in the past without the plugs in so it had a "free motion" with the slightest amount of drag so when i rotated the crank with the plugs in i was shocked how much more drag there was so i was a bit concerned.

all is good now so thanks to all!
