Default Buying Brand New (2004) Accord Coupe. How much should I pay?

I intend to buy a new Honda Accord Coupe V6 (automatic with Navigation package). If it matters, I want a black paint exterior and black leather interior. I live in the DC metro area, so there are plenty of Honda dealerships around.

The sticker price is $28,950. My question is, what is the lowest price I can reasonably expect to buy this car?

Thanks!

depends on how well you can bargain and what your method of payment is

The best thing to do is to shop around, and get dealers to bid against each other... they will lower thge price once they see that your serious.

go for the invoice price about $25700-26000 its possible depends on your bargaining skill.
im pretty sure your salesman will keep telling u that the invoice price is too low because it how much they bought the car from the factory...dont listen to them, its BS stick with the invoice price. since there are many dealerships around im pretty sure one of them will sell it to u.

plus dont act like u want the car so much, walk out the dealership to scare them if u have to

I agree. Dealers never pay what is on the invoice. they pay a separate figure that is not posted on the window sticker. The price they pay is usually well below, around $1-2k. Most dealers work off commission and the closer the car is to what they actually paid the smaller the commission check for that dealer.

I paid $700 over invoice for mine. Same exact configuration you are looking for.

I also had them throw in (at their cost) the lip for the decklid and Lo-Jack.

Shoot for invoice. Shouldn't be hard to get

I bought my 2004 AV6 EX Coupe (Silver) w/ XM and Navi at Rosenthal Honda in Tysons.

The 2004 V6 gains the following over the previous 2003 model:
-XM Radio
-GPS controlled climate control when set to auto

It was manufactured in Sept '03 and I bought it at end of Sept (9/30 to be exact).

I got it for a sale price of $27,000 plus freight i think this is about $460, and payed about $1195 for extended 100k mile warranty (it usually is about $1695), plus processing fee (this is always a bullsh*t charge..LOL), tax, title, tags.

All in all it came up to about $30,400-sumtin out the door...

The quirkz I got were:
-free OEM mudguards front and rear
-free honda wheel locks (too bad they dont work on my aftermarket wheels)
-free XM radio activation and 3 months of service ($45 value)
-2 years of free oil changes ($160 value)

the GPS DVD is based off of 2001 information however, but you can get the latest update by Alpine for less than $200 online...i believe this update was in 2003, but i have read that the changes are minor. (I dont understand why Honda wont issue upgrades for GPS for FREE!!!)

be careful wiping down the dashboard...the padded material tends to scuff easily if you rub it too hard...i find that armor all hides any scratches and scuffs on it...you just have to deal with a glossy look though.

after 17,000 miles, I have had the following warranty work done
-replaced headliner console (sunglass holder retracting mechanism went out...and got stuck alot)
-replaced driver power seat tracks.. (original tracks were loose...during hard breaking, the seat would shift noticeably forward, and jerk backward during hard acceleration).
-there is a factory-defect on the hood paint that is pretty large (the metal flake has a different pattern)...Honda has offer to repaint it, and I have a month to decide, considering it will be manually painted as opposed to robotically painted in OEM.

-since it's been in a few times in less than 8 months, Rosenthal has washed my car 2x...and most recently, detailed my car (wash/wax, vacuum interior, cleaned glass, vacuumed trunk, clean and shined the engine bay, and shampooed the carpetting)

I would have gotten the AV6 5spd manual, but they were only giving a $500 discount on this as opposed to $1500 on the automatic. I liked the stiffer suspension on the 6spd, but wasnt fond of the cheesy checkerboard fake-carbon fiber panels...the auto's brushed-aluminum look was way better IMHO.

I didnt care for the 6spd 17" wheels, cuz I knew that I was going to get new rims later on. The +60w increase on the stereo power on the 6spd isn't noticeable compared to the Auto's 120w system.

Maybe next year, there will be a 5-spd "tiptronic" auto (like on the 04+ TSX) for the AV6 5spd....

I just purchased (10 days ago) a Red 2004 Accord Coupe V6 EX automatic with Navigation, XM radio, and leather.. The before tax price including the shipping ($460) was $25,025.00. Honda has an extra $1000 off to the dealer's right now but some will not tell you. So I got this for under invoice.. If you can believe invoice. The only thing I added was the automatic mirror for $198 plus $40 installation.

If you buy through CarsDirect.com but don't finance through them, you'll pay $25,131 which already includes destination charge. I've noticed that this site usually gives the best prices out there in the car market. Print up the sheet and try to get a nearby dealer to beat the price. If they don't, then buy from CarsDirect.

Under any circumstances you should NEVER pay full MSRP for a "common" car (Hondas definitely fit into the common category). The only times when you'll end up paying more than msrp are for either ultra luxury/sport cars (BMW M5), exotic cars (Enzo Ferrari), or cars that are in unusually high demand (Mini Cooper, but I have no idea who the heck would actually buy one of these).

If you go to Cars.com, they have a page on their research section that gives good tips when buying your car (cars.com -> News/Advice -> Shopping -> Negotiating Tips). There's also a page on that site called "Let's make a Deal, or Two or Three" or something like that. That page also gives good tips.

In general, do your research before you even step foot into your first dealership, otherwise you're at the mercy of the salesman, and he'll know it. Also remember that you're the buyer... you can step out of the deal at anytime, until you sign the papers.

The only reason why I know this info and I stumbled onto honda-tech.com (and your post) was 'cause I was planning on getting an Accord too, but I think I'll have to wait 'till next year to get mine. Planning on getting the same car, but in manual and with black or blue paint, I haven't decided. Good luck with your negotiating and happy driving .

Edit: I just remembered that Enzo Ferraris were only sold by invitation or something like that, so I guess that example wasn't a very good one .

Here is the method I use to buy cars. It got me a Jeep Liberty two years ago for $300 less than invoice with no destination charge, and it got me an Accord LX V-6 last week for $500 less than invoice with no destination charge.

Get the names and numbers of all your local dealers. For Jeep I used 7, for Honda I used 11. The more the better, but only as far as you are willing to drive for a bargain.

Call each one and get the name and fax number of the Fleet Manager.

Fax each fleet manager a request for the absolute lowest "out the door" price for the exact car you want. Maybe start off with a couple of dealerships to make sure you've got the options, etc. right. Note in the quote that you are buying within the next couple of weeks and that you haven't visited any salespeople at the dealership (which means no sales commission involved). Also state you don't want rustproofing, pinstriping, etc. State that you are going to buy from the dealer that gives you the lowest price.

When they give you a price get them to fax it to you, with a breakdown (car, sales tax, etc.)

Go to the dealer you really want to buy from (if they are not the lowest) - which could be the closest dealer, the dealer that has the car in stock etc - and tell them you will buy from them if they match your lowest price.

Never walk into a car dealership, except for a test drive. Do all the negiotations over the phone. Don't mention a trade in until you have a price you like, because the value of your trade in has nothing to do with a fair price for the new vehicle.

For the dealership that you took a test drive at, deal with the salesman rather than the fleet manager, otherwise they might get upset. So with this in mind, best to take a test drive at a dealership other than the one you really want to buy from.

Sounds like a really good plan, but in so cal area (I know that this probably doesn't apply to all dealerships, and this doesn't really apply to the person who made this thread since he doesnt' live in CA) a lot of dealerships refuse to sell cars right over the phone, for obvious reasons. Not sure if that'll apply to you Dawnimiche, but it's worth a try.

That's great. I know you will like it. The only problems I am having is with the dealer. I have been in for service "new car stuff" twice and twice I have had grease and black smugges on different parts of the car. First it was the drivers carpet this time the driver's seat, driver's door, center console, head liner and moon roof liner. What a mess. This time someone took change from the changer holder.. I think I will have to find a new dealer for service

I was able to buy mine without a navigation system for 500 over invoice. Click on this link for the invoice price. http://www.car-prices-costs.co....html Sam's Club offers a service where some dealers will sell cars to their members for $500 over invoice. If you call them, they will let you know which Honda dealers in your area participate. The closest participating dealer for me was 500 miles away, but I was able after much negotiating to get a local dealer to match that price.

I just got my Accord Coupe V6 6 speed manual, I payed $26000 out the door, but the auto suppose to be cheaper than manual that's what I heard.
I didn't get the Navi-system, just xm radio and CD changer, the model I got it's EX.
suppose the dealer told me with NAvi-system it's $2000 more.

by the way, remember to ask more things like "free oil change", "free key chain" or whatever free stuff when you deal the price with them.

and look out for the mailage of the car you are getting.

good luck
