My 01 Accord is still filled with the factory green coolant. I was at my dealership to buy some brake pads and I asked about coolant, the parts guy said they only sell the blue Type II stuff now. He said the green coolant isn't available from Honda anymore, and hasn't been in a long time.

Is there any reason not to replace the green Honda coolant with blue Honda coolant? I would run distilled water through the system a few times to clean out the old green stuff.

The parts guy gave me a good deal on the blue coolant, two gallons for $10. I would like to use this stuff unless there is a reason not to.

As long as you clear the system out of green coolant you're good to go.

The Type II coolant (blue) is a '100k mile' coolant and will last you awhile.

The HG Type-II blue coolant is the same stuff as the HG green coolant used prior to 2003. The color is the only difference.

It's exactly half price. He said if I bought a gallon he would give me one free, and one of them rang up 0.00 on the receipt.

I was just chatting with the parts guy while I bought brake pads. I asked if they sold full strength coolant and complained politely when he said they only have 50/50 mix. So he offered me a free gallon, which I couldn't pass up.

I don't usually care for 50/50 mix because it gets diluted if you flush the system with distilled water first. You can't drain the water out of the heater core, and there is always some left in the block, so when you're done the 50/50 mix is more like 60/40 or maybe less. I have a coolant tester that I'll use to make sure things aren't too diluted.

I wish I lived near your Honda dealer, the list price is $14/gallon. I buy some of my supplies at my dealer and some through internet. At Handa Accessories, their "sales" price is $10.60.

If you want straight antifreeze, buy it from a parts store. Honda doesn't offer anything other than premixed coolant to their automotive division dealers. Complaining to the parts guy just makes you look like a tool. It's not his fault.

In addition, you're paying way too much attention to the mix ratio. It doesn't matter if it's off a bit; it's not going to blow up or anything.

I don't know if its different over here in Canada but I just bought a jug of the green honda coolant at my local dealership last week, its also straight coolant too, not premixed.
