97 Accord won't start, burning out rotors/distributor caps?
Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and very new to working on cars, so I could use a little help! I've searched around as best I could, and didn't find anything directly addressing this (I don't think):
The car is a 97 Accord LX Sedan
My car has trouble/won't start. It has had this problem a few times in the past, and I had the rotor button replaced which seemed to fix it. However, after a few months the same problem occured and I had to replace the rotor button and distributor cap again. Recently, I replaced the rotor button and distributor cap a third time. The car seemed to run fine for a few days, then I had the problem again. I took the distributor cap off, cleaned it and the rotor button (scraped off the carbon/buildup), and the car started up, but obviously this only worked for a couple of starts. I replaced the cap/rotor button again, and after running a few errands the car already has difficulty starting up (although I did manage to start it).
Is this a problem with the distributor? I already know it is not the battery/alternator and i'm pretty sure it's not the starter. Do I need a whole new distributor, or is there possibly a cheaper fix? Thanks for your help!
oh and feel free to IM or email me! Thanks again!

Re: 97 Accord won't start, burning out rotors/distributor caps? (dmj)
another quick question: how can I tell if I have the V-tech motor or not? I was originally under the impression that I did not. I have the LX trim, which I thought had the Hitachi engine. However, whenever I bought the rotor button and distributor cap, the Vtech parts fit and the Hitachi parts did not. Could anyone help me out w/ this? Thanks.

there is a few ways to tell if you have a vtec motor, 1 the valve cover will have it writen on the top. 2 on a 97 accord the engine code for a vtec is f22b1... non vtec will say f22b2... 3 the sparkplug wires will be closer to the exhaust manifold if it's a vtec and closer to the intake manifold if it's a non vtec...

Internal or external coil?
Is there a plug wire coming off the cap going to the ignition coil to the rear left of the cylinder head? If so, that's the external coil system.
I think that's the difference in what type cap and rotor you need.
Something is causing the cap and rotor to get carboned up fast. You have to find out what that is. It could be coil, ignitor pack, wires, plugs, not enough juice going to the cap etc (faulty wiring, bad ground, etc).
