'96 notorious for ABS problems? HELP!
Hey all, newb here with a 1996 accord EX wagon. Been in and out of the shop lately with inconsistent brake troubles and just got a estimate for repairs at about half of the cars total value. $2100 to make the ABS all better with a new modulator/accumulator. Sheesh! I don't know whether to shoot the horse on this one and move on, or pay up and keep our family wagon going. I'm thinking there has to be alternatives.
The little wagon has only 80,000 miles and looks good, so it's got lots of life left in it ..maybe.
It started with a leaky master cyl which was replaced with a new factory part.. twice! Since the first m/c swap we have had an inconsistent pedal despite being bled several times. Also new since the m/c changes is the familiar minute long buzzing sound and abs light going on as it stops. We have now disconnected the plug under the glove box so it no longer buzzes, but our brake woes continue. I know we now have no abs, but we should still have brakes, Yes? We need to drive the car as is until a decision can be reached on whether/how to repair the abs.
Question: Is not the abs system separate from the m/c? Could a faulty but inactive abs system affect the brake pedal? Our mechanic swears there is no air in the system, so I am lost.
Somebody advise, Please!
