96 accord, have taken to shop 3x's, still can't fix it...help please
This is so frustrating, I have taken my 96 accord (4cyl vtec, came out of a 94. Auto, 4 door) to the shop b/c the CEL was on, it read that there was a misfire on cyl #3 and was idling rough.
Runs smooth when I accelerated but when stopping and idle it was rough.
I take it to a new shop.
They replace the distributor, secure vacuum lines and adjust valves.
They charge me $680 for everything.
Tell me its fixed, I drive it to work, no problems. On the way home, the CEL pops up again!!!
Car is running fine without rough idle now though. CEL is still on for the misfire on cly #3 now though.
I called them and they want me to drop it back off.
Why can none of the shops just fix this thing though? Can anyone shed some light on whats causing this issue?
Also if they can't fix it still should I ask for a refund?
Is there a way that I can make them refund me for misdiagnosed work if they refuse?
$600 dollars for a misdiagnose is too much, $100 is a different story though but not the latter.
Thanks!

It seems that you have swapped a 94 OBD1 engine into your 96 OBD2, correct? Also, what else was swapped over?

The engine had been in it and running fine for a 4 months before the CEL came on with the issues.
There was a full long block from the 94 and any parts needed off the old engine due to it having a bad head/block (scarred walls from pistons hitting them).
I can find the list tomorrow for sure and post up exactly what I can find out.

I know the car didn't need a whole new distributor after the fact now, b/c they even said it didn't fix the problem BUT after the "vavle" adjustment and securing some mixed vacuum hoses it seemed to help but the main problem was the EGR most likely, until my engine caught on fire.

94 EX EGR port cleaning yesterday. Several glogged ports and large carbon build up. All I can say is wow.....like night and day. I'm a noob, but you might be pleasantly surprised after you clean it.
