Default 94 accord, ex - 4 cyl: best approach to r&r automatic transmission?

I hope this is the proper forum for this type question.

I need to replace my transmission and I have been told the easiest is to drop it is from the bottom as opposed to pulling the motor and trans together. is this true if you have to do it with the car on jack stands?

any help will be appreciated.

Randy

you will need to support the engine with a brace that fits on the strut towers (most common) and then you can safely jack the car up and remove the trans from below. It is a lot easier and less messy to do it this way.

First, grab a manual... makes the job a lot easier. You don't have to pull the motor and yes MUCH easier to drop it from the bottom.

I changed transmission on my Accord 91. Completely alone.

Of course it is an older model, but I also have Accord 96 and can tell that the difference is not big - it is even easier do work on 96 - more space.

Manual helps - I have a repair manual for Accord 94-97 in pdf format . It's about 50MB. You can also find it on ebay for $10-15.

I removed the trasmission from the bottom - I had a hoist attached to the ceiling. Unscrewing bolts that hold transmission and engine together was tricky - there is one hidden bolt underneath. You can only see it when you have removed the suspension from the drivers side - when you look from the side of the car inside - it will be a little higher that the level of the oil filter. I did not have a jack - I just put two pipes on the floor and piece of plywood and I rolled it out from underneath the car. Make sure your car is raised high enough.

It is also a good idea to check all rubber boots on half-shafts. You can replace them yourself too. I was charged $132 to replace the half-shafts and $100 for the work, while doing it myselft would take less than $40 and about 4 hours of work. It has some tricks too. Just follow the manual.
