'92 Accord Starts then dies.....
OK, this is what I have done:
1992 Honda Accord LX 4 door 5 speed. I pulled the engine and cleaned the engine compartment, put a new timing belt on and etc. I replaced the clutch with an exedy stage one organic and all clutch cylinders. I installed the engine and connected everything, using caution to insure every connector was lubed with silicone dia-electric compound and all grounds cleaned and connected. I replaced every hose to make sure that this job would last for a while.
OK, now for the problem:
I started the car for the first time a few weeks ago and it started right up, but I noticed that someone had stolen all the gas in the accord (I never leave a stored car without a full tank), so I shut it down and went and got some gas (10 Gallons) and put it in the tank with some additive (heet).
I restarted the car after rechecking everything for leaks etc. and it ran okay long enough to put a timming light on it and make sure it was right on the money. At this point the car ran for a little while longer then died. I replaced the Main relay as it had given me some trouble in 2006. I swapped distributors off of a compatible ’94 and it made little difference. Still starts, runs for about 30 seconds and dies.
I pulled the plugs to find that 3 had fouled with a black dry residue on them. I then cleaned the injectors and the egr valve and made sure all ignition components were on right and tight. I have new spark plug wires also. It started for about a minute this time and fouled the plugs again.
I have swapped everything I can but the ignition coil as the 94’s don’t fit the 92 correctly.
Am I close to this problem, or did I do something stupid?
Thanks for reading this long winded post, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if I have to try something new or a test I don’t know about..
You guys Rock!

If someone stole all your gas, who's to say they didn't put anything in there that could be messing up your car. Just a thought.

Humm,,,,
Didn't even give that a tought till now, lets see, new main relay, cleaned the injectors, filled the tank up with clean gas, new plugs, wires, swapped dizzy's between my cars, checked all grounds, cleaned every connection, checked and rechecked the timing belt.
Thanks, I will do some searching around checking this out.......

Re: '92 Accord Starts then dies..... (whltng)
I have figured out what has happened, the coil was way down on power allowing the sparkplugs to foul.
After fixing that, the power was not up to snuff. It hit hard on every RPM but lost power as the RPM's went up.
Frustrated, I pulled off the distributer cap and out came a couple of teaspoons of oil and the inside of the cap was soaked with a light coat of oil. Lucky I had used a 5-30W oil for break-in.
I have searched for the inside seal and will order a couple of them to have complete distributer bodies in good shape for standby. I will order a new distributer from Honda to replace the one that is leaking and go on.
Because it is so hot outside it took awhile to get this Accord running well enough to figure all this out. While I am waiting for parts I will bring the A/C back up to r134a specs from the original r12 specs that the car came with.
I hope this helps someone with their accord…
My Honda's are great to drive in traffic and around town; they are also safe and solid performers... And they get really great gas milage... I've given a few away to my family when I get tired of them or find a new one.. That is if you want to call a '94 Accord "new"......
Again, sorry it took me so long, but I have been rather distracted with my newly acquired 1973 Corvette with 500 horsepower…..

Re: '92 Accord Starts then dies..... (whltng)
Update for those that care:
Put in a new distributer.
Dumbass me did not have the firing order right.
It runs really good now.
Time to get Wheels and tires.
Install the sound system.
The Exedy Clutch is smooth as butter.
The A/C even works great.
Next project is suspension.
I am elated with my progress….

Hi, my sisters 94 accord is having a similar problem as your description, it will start just fine but will die within 5 secs. When I rev it, it will rev up for a few secs then die, even with the pedal to the floor. does this sound similar to your problem? Im going to check the spark plugs to see if they are fouled like yours. What was it that ended up fixing your problem? please get back to me as soon as possible because the car is sitting in the grocery store parking lot.
thank you,
Brent
